Needed some small gears a few days ago, and couldn't really find any for the purpose, so I whipped some up. I've tested them up to pretty high speeds, and they should be able to put through the torque (was transmitting about 3200 on angular speedo with pretty low fluctuation). Thought I may as well upload them. Sweetness. GEARS. Awesoneness. I dislike the ones in PHX, it's too hard to find out which go with which.
I could never get the PHX ones I tried to work anyway.
Oh this is very useful. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this. The gears seems to respond much better to high-torque situations, and can handle higher RPMs in the same fashion. Good job on the construction! You managed to pack in better performance into a smaller package!
Can't wait to try these out! (Can't access GMod atm..) If they work as good as the comments and pictures suggest, you're a savior! So tired of the old PHX gears.. :S And I like the size of these Very good job indeed!
Thanks very much. I'm glad other people are getting them to work without too much trouble! I should point out, the panels are in there for that exact purpose. I've sized them to make it easy to line them up - use smartsnap with them in quarters or eighths.
I'm absolutely loving these gears, but do you think you will be extending the pack at all? I would love to see some bevel gears n the same style, but I'm not so sure how you could get them to work. Also, I've never seen worm gears, cycloid gears, or helical gears before. Might be worth your time to try out perhaps?

Bevels should be possible, although a bit trickier to design. (I'm an engineering student, so I'd certainly hope I'd be able to give it a go!) As for the other types; worm drives and helical gears I also thought about - although potentially very useful, performance might not be fantastic - both may require pretty complex collision models. A helix is not a nice shape to simulate... I may try them though, for a challenge if nothing else. Cycloid looks like it might be more trouble than its worth, and would definitely have complex physics models. I could make a ring gear and carrier, for an epicyclic system - it should work ok, but that doesn't change the fact that epicyclic gears are still practically witchcraft to me, haha!

It's great to have people like you around, even if all this was just a 'weekend project'. Best of luck to you nonetheless!
I've uploaded V1.1, with three widths of gear, as someone requested (and as I considered already).
I've uploaded V1.1, with three widths of gear, as someone requested (and as I considered already).
It might be just me, but the '2' width gears seem to work the best of the widths. Idk, could have been flaws with my testing.
I absolutely agree, bevel gears would be amazing in this pack, me and white have so much trouble with all the gear slippage from the bevel gears in phx so if you could work on this to make them like real life you would be my personal hero! thnx ______________________________________________ YOU AINT GOT NO PANCAKE MIX!
As a suggestion, can you just pull the teeth straight out of the gears vertically to use in right angle gear systems? You know like in some of the PHX gears where it sticks out to give grip at that angle. That should be pretty easy to do, if even half of these gears had it it would help.
This is relevant to my interests
Here's a picture of what I'm talking about: Ideally having it stick out like that you can mount it and have the teeth mesh for 90 degree gear systems.

I don't really have the time to model right now, though, so it might be a little while.
If someone put together a way for me to get my damn wings models into gmod. :P
I was half expecting a minature Marcus Fenix.
No more will i have to build a car around the transmission, Thank you!
wonder if one could update the phx svn with these... edit- holy crap, did I say something intelligent?
This is awesome! Should be integrated into PHX SVN definitely!
Honestly these gears have pretty nice torque numbers, and actually seem to mesh nicer then the phx ones do. Granted I still haven't been able to get my 100lb-ft to the ground through a differential. Really hoping either the addon creator or someone else makes a nice set of smaller angle gears. Similar to my post above. Another feature you might wanna try is to get gears that are set to match on the phx plates, so I can have more then just 3 gears that fit nicely. :P
These need to be added to PHX. NOW! really, great work
If someone put together a way for me to get my damn wings models into gmod. :P
Ha, feel your pain. Ive never met a more streamlined 3D modeling system as Wings 3D. The ones that create models for Gmod etc are really hard to just pick up and use and require ages to get from amature blockyness to smooth perfection. In wings? Just hit s! But im sure there is a way to do it. Save it as a file format, convert and convert again, compile and bobs your mothers brother. If only it were possible... *goes into JD like fantasy* Back on topic, really nice cogs. Dont know what I will use them for but at least i know they work better than PHX. Good job Hysteria!
I'm downloading them now. It'd be nice to be able to put a simple gearbox in my engine powered vehicles. The PHX ones are a bit silly.
Any more updates coming? I'm really looking forward to angle gears for diffs, and a larger selection to match on a phx plate, so far my best is a 3 speed with 2nd being 1:1 and First and Third being opposites of eachother. These gears seem to be a heck of a lot grippier then the ones included with phx, I don't want to see this go down the hole.
I'm nearly sure this project is dead, but just to make sure, is this project dead?
Nooo, don't die project.. don't die..
Necrobumps are a no-no...but maybe Hysteria has time now to do at least a few bevel gears? You seemed all gung-ho and for it when it was first brought up; are such items still a possibility?
