Ya, I'm making a map that is going to be for building but I wanna know what makes you guys want to play a map.
for example, I LOVE gm_bigcity because its huge and has alot of variety and building room and it is kinda realistic.
I LOVE gm_contruct for it's simplicity.
So facepunch what makes YOU want to play a map, and also can you mention a map that you play alot and why?
Well, first it has to be pleasing to the eye. That means add lighting, change the skybox to something other than the default one, add decals and overlays where needed, etc.
Second, having a layout would be nice. If you start a map and decide on a whim that you need to add this or that, it will look a bit more hastily made. Think about a floor plan first, sketch it on paper in detail, marking everything, then proceeding to hammer to make what you sketched.
Finally, take your time. A 5-hour rushed map with a sketched floor plan will look much worse than a map that takes hundreds of hours but has no floor plan at all.
Also, i dont want a gm_construct or flatgrass remake... those are used often because they dont have to be downloaded... i need some kind of interesting thing to make me wanna download+play a map
triggers.
I think the real question here is, what makes a map NOT want to be played.
buttons, switches, doors, ect...

wow no need to be an ass.
for one you should use clean textures (often normal mapped or shiny ones work to attract the eye)

Clean textures are a must for any non-hl2 styled maps. also, if you use crazybump, learn how to use it properly (MOAR SHINY does not mean MOAR AWESOME), it was one of the issues I had when I first started using crazybump, everything was way too shiny and bumpy.
I don't want another build map. Everyone should be satisfied with our big plethora already. I want something original, good looking.

I'd be amazed to see one post from you, just one, that wasn't inferring something bad or just blatantly flaming or stupid. Please consider what your post sounds like.
Why would I tell you? xD
Okay, basically look at everything that has already been done. Then say "none of that's going to be in my map."
We can't tell you because we don't know; you have to make something entirely new for it to succeed. Maybe not original, but something that hasn't been seen in a Gmod map before.
Custom textures and models will always make it look like more effort has gone into the map.

you think im bad? open your eyes to the people replying to new mappers.

I murdered a man, but that guy murdered four people! I don't deserve any punishment at all.
i never said that i didn't murder a man now did i?
i never said that i didn't murder a man now did i?
Neither did I. l2analogy.
Needs to look good and have something unique in it.

We are providing constructive criticism... not saying:
you fail get out now :fuckyou:
ventalation is a really big plus for me. its fun sneaking around in them. also if its a city but you can go inside them. also if you have some secrets that are more than jsut a hidden button. but yeah deffinity air vents ftw. or sewer stuff

sorry, shiny and bump mapped often proved a nice touch when used in the right areas
I like maps you can build in, but aren't rigid structured construct maps. ie: I hate maps that say "THIS AREA IS FOR BUILDING VEHICLES" or "THIS AREA IS FOR BUILDING BOATS" or "THIS IS THE MAIN CONSTRUCTION AREA" and so forth. I like maps that just do it naturally, they don't have to tell you what specific areas are for what, you can find that out for yourself. Example: freespace 06 and above, gm_reaction, and some rp maps. Those maps were awesome. They had lakes, cities, roads, it was outdoors, it was nicely put together, there were no obvious building areas, it all just flowed. Some main offenders are gm_mobenix, gm_botmap, gm_flatgrass, and so on and so forth. Basically construct remakes.
Some tips
-Make it visually pleasing: nice lighting, nice atmosphere for building or whatever, nicely detailed and laid out.
-Make it flow together naturally
-Triggers for certain areas: something maps definitely lack nowadays are some cool triggers that do cool stuff, like trigger an attack or something fun so it isn't just building all the time.
-Detail: if you make a building, flesh it out with elevators and windows and things inside.
-Size: if you are making a huge map, it better have a huge amount of things to do and a good means of transportation. Same goes with small maps: you cant clutter so many things into a small sized map.
-Something unique: include a little twist or something in your map to possibly entice more downloads or something.
-Nodes: nodes are a must. If your map isn't noded, then it sucks.
-Custom textures: now this isn't a must, but some change from standard hl2 or cs affairs is often welcome.
-Unity: you cant have a medieval map and have some alien or modern city right next to it, be sensible and stick with the theme of the map throughout so it blends and there are no harsh contrasts of places on the map.
That's pretty much it, and be creative!

I meant things like leaving Shape Recoginition on high for a brick texture, where it will end up looking like tinfoil. As well as things like wood, which isn't supposed to shine too much, but you decide to leave brightness high and contrast low, so that it is as shiny as polished metal.
Obviously specular and normal maps help, but it just gets annoying when used in excess to the point that it doesn't look real
Thanks for the input guys, the map I'm working on is called gm_Simple (might be changed) but it's a map that you would go to if you want to try something out real quick and not load up such a huge map like flatgrass or such a map that is more for looks like construct but I'm having troubles with the lighting(because it's indoors) so ill take your guys advice and try to work some stuff out.also I was working on a map a while ago that had a generator room for all of the city's power and if the generator went out then all the lights up above go out, but I down know what to make the above look like.
Excuse me if I sound like a complete amateur right now but.. What on Earth is this "crazybump" ?
I need to know, since none of the textures in my maps which is supposed to be shiny, actually is.
Google magic my friend.

I did google it. But all I found was some weird forum called CrazyBump.

Agreed, oh and by the way. i just found out that a nice shiny, bump mapped texture from hl2 look beautiful in a dark environment! a little fire or something burning in the distance provides a good reflection when you place your env_cubemaps correctly :D

crazybump is a program that generates normal, specular, parallax, and ambient occlusion maps, as well as remove improper shading and highlighting from your diffuse texture.
