MAP IS ON PROBABLYPERMANENT HIATUS, READ BELOW
Guys, thanks for the attention and the bump, but unfortunately I think this map may actually be dead, for a number of factors. 1) The map is excruciatingly ambitious and I've already found that I hit my 20% face limit and somewhere around that for vectors, and I've barely done a minor area. 2) My computer's graphics card has been completely fried and now I can't operate anything remotely 3D (my soul bleeds over this). 3) I'm going to art school in 3 weeks. So as of now, I'm declaring this map ON HIATUS for WHOKNOWSHOWLONG. I'm really sorry to whoever got really excited about this map and might have even put in effort to help it. However, this map -is- inspired by my own original idea for a webcomic which is in the works, called Quarantine A1... So, whoever is interested in seeing how it would have manifested, and how it will in story and comic form (and boy, is there a CRAPLOAD of story behind it), let me know and I'll definitely keep you posted.
Archival Stuff I've started working on a map that will replicate the city that I have imagined for a comic I am writing. However, the thing is a huge undertaking, and I'd love as much help as I can possibly get, in terms of ideas (and more if anyone is willing to help). First off, I think it's necessary to explain just how Skyfall City would work. rp_skyfall is all in the visual and the concept; the map will focus more on the pre-existing storyline rather than using a bunch of gmod props, because most of the emphasis will be on the RPing. So, that said, you need to know the storyline! Or you can just skip the story part. Don't mind the dates, I still haven't figured them out properly. Story In the year 2020, there was a sprawling plague called the Sleeping Plague. It was the most contagious plague ever; it spread through air, touch, water, and it was nonviral, so it actually moved on its own. It also killed whoever caught it within 3 hours--they would feel an overwhelming exhaustion, then just fall over and drop dead. The U.S. government, in an insane effort to control this plague, began to set up gigantic metal walls around all the cities that were infected. The very first city it was done on, Anhal City, was henceforth titled Quarantine A1 and left to die. Twenty or so years later, many different independent rich people came across the city, and for some reason, decided that this would make a GREAT place to start building a metropolis. So, they built in the only direction they could: up. After they built their great, rich utopia, they titled it, Skyfall City. Architecture Rather than demolish the old buildings, they used a new technology that allowed them to place metalloid supports around and through the buildings, making them so strong that they could support entire metal bases placed on top of the buildings, which would then support gigantic skyscrapers. The map is a complete nightlife city; lights everywhere, skyscrapers, megahotels, megaclubs, and more. Because the government abandoned the city after they quarantined it, there are no building restrictions--as a result, you see a lot of buildings literally hanging by ropes and poles, attached anywhere, small huts constructed along the metal bases, and hideouts everywhere, complimenting the huge skyscrapers. Nitty Gritty Essentially, the map has about 4 levels: 0. The underground, subway system, and other secrets (will tell more later on in production) 1. Ground level, buildings not higher than two stories, regular Anhal City remains 2. First metal base and about two more stories of miscellaneous buildings, underground hideouts, clubs, stores, etc., the "slums" of the city 3. Skyscrapers and up, up to as many damn stories as you please with anything and everything Your Help I first started working on this map with a Half Life 2: Episode One setting, but I thought about Orange Box and it appealed to me more. Besides which, I hadn't gotten terribly far on my first draft of the map, and it looked like this: Little planning, not big enough, bad architecture, and just really comes down to little planning and lack of knowledge. So, I come to you, beautiful Facepunch members, for help. The first thing I've decided to do is start planning the city rigorously, starting with the ground level. I don't know a huge amount about city planning, but I'd love any advice, suggestions, ideas, or personal additions you would love to see in the city, as well as maybe ideas for city flow. Just working off paper, this is what I have so far in terms of a rough draft: This part is the somewhat northern part of Anhal City which results in a town hall, attached police department and fire department, and residential western and eastern wings. Going south, it gets more commercial. H = House CH = City Hall PD = Police Department FD = Fire Department ST = Store AP = Apartment (or whatever) GS = Gas Station So my question is, what do you recommend going where, what do you know about city planning, what would you like to see put in it, etc.? This is still bare bones, so I can go anywhere with this city. Bear in mind, though, that it's a smaller city (for engine restraints, my sanity, and claustrophobia with the metal walls), and the buildings on the ground level should only go up to two stories at most. If you want to request things, feel free--all I really need are the name of a place, the level it's on, and what the place is. Any more extra information you can provide is useful, too. If it's a good idea and fits, I'll add it. Want to Model/Skin/Texture/Map/Storybuild/Etc.? If you do, let me know! Some of you already have, but there's much more work to be done! These Too Shall Pass Lamely-titled section for what I'm planning to put in the map: Level 0 Broken underground subway Level 1 City Hall Police Department Fire Department Bank(?) Department Store(?) Gas Station(?) Theater(?) Offices(?) Level 2 The Haven - Nightclub Harry's - Slum bar, crappy emergency nuke hideaway Secret chem labs, android/robot labs, and more Level 3 Cryogene Inc. - Cloning, freezing, and genetics technology The Arison - Megahotel - Ambrosia - The Arison's bar/restaurant Plateau Technologies - Robotics, androids, and cyborg implants Pictures Started on the City Hall roundabout. Dev textures and basic lighting so you can see (will be very dark in final map). The doors are immovable, but you can actually get through the right one by crouching. More Detailed Plans Megaclub Cronos Massively situated right over City Hall, Cronos is one of the few buildings that connects straight through to Level 1, skipping Level 2 altogether. It sits itself right over all of City Square, extending well across and over the police department and fire department--the main entrance is a screwdriver-style elevated platform, underneath its own belly--it turns to ascend upward into the actual lobby of the club itself. Glass walls also come down to block off any fools who might splatter themselves under the screwdriver platform--not for care of human life, but for cleanliness. The club has many wires that extend from its body and hook into different areas of the city. The club may also have a clocktower with a working clock--if not, this idea would probably go to the Megahotel, The Arison. The club would be a front for an elite assassination group of the city, as well as several more illicit and expensive organizations, such as cryofreezing labs and cloning. It's really a central hub for the entire city more than anything.
I love the concept, good luck!
By looking at the concept, i think i might download this map. :3 Good luck
Hey, thanks for the encouragement, guys! I've added some stuff on requests in particular, added some pictures, and a things-to-add list onto the main post.
sounds real cool! i would love to play on this map!
Nice work! Looks like a good map, really! Got to be good ;D
HOWDY!! really nice, i cant wait to have it in my game
Amazing. The lighting is rad too.
Hey, thanks, folks! Here, while I'm off at school, here's some more concept designs. Above ground level club, The Haven. The bottom level of this drawing is the actual club, and above, right on top of the nightclub, apartments are situated. Rest assured that it's not easy to sleep there. The Arison, the main hotel and megahotel of Skyfall City. The slanted roof is home to the finest suites as well as the administration's main offices. The little diagram to the bottom right is a layout for myself when I was mapping out how it would work if I installed airducts on some levels. I hope to have a fully working room service system in place for the Arison, as well. Oh, and that's actually supposed to be a pool in the top area there, with the little round thing with something that looks like a cross in it. P.S.: Had a thought regarding lighting on ground level. I was thinking, rather than have everything be dark, why not have the metallic supports glow blue, with futuristic technology? I think it'd make good ambient light while fitting the theme. Thoughts on this?
I like the premise. Lot's of promising concept art too. And yes, blue lighting is very sexy.
Here's some screenshots of the City Hall's "lobby", partially textured, as well as with the supports which are obviously very magically technological: Textures on the pillars aren't so great (particularly the part where I'm not using the vertical column texture), but I hope to either make/find some better textures eventually. Oh, and yes, those supports will be pretty much all over the ground level, wherever they're needed.
Hey could you link me those custom pillar textures? They're AMAZING.
They're not actually custom... Just filter stone in the texture browser. But, I'm working with Orange Box, so I have the textures from HL2, HL2:EP1, and HL2:EP2, so depending on whether or not you have them, you may not have it. I'm not sure. Specifically, the pillar vertical file texture is called stone/stonecolumn001a, and the textures I used on the non-vertical parts were just a scaled up and moved around stone/stonewall013a and stone/stonewall024a. Hope that helps. :)
Keep the work on going, looking good!
Looks Great!
Good luck making it... the drawing looks great and is nice and detailed... You're a good mapper based on the screens and the drawings. (I made maps first, but that was for Quake II) (Also know a bit hammer but not that much!)
Thanks! I appreciate the help. The map looks great by the way. Edit: 300th Post! WOOT!
It looks amazing! But I have a question... For example: You mentioned people moving into the city and started building up, does that mean that the city gets nicer the higher up you get? An idea for the underground would be, maybe, a couple of safety rooms/hidden rooms. Or (if possible) an old, crashed train/a floating, still working train? (BTW, first post!!)
Cool! An underground subway station would be cool. (With broken down subway)
Damn. I was hoping for a transporting train :buddy:
It looks pretty good and looks like the first of its kind, their should be an underground subway system with crashed train etc and also loads of hideaways for criminals!
question: can you expand the map size limit? my: underground-dont-press-button-otherwise-underground-collapse map is a bit on the short size...
i like it alot keep going
It looks extremely promising, good luck!
It looks like an awesome idea. If I had any skill in mapping whatsoever I would help you out in any way that I could. Maybe in a couple of years I can give you my two cents XD
i really cant wait till this map comes out. when do u think it will be out and wat website?
I think that story would make an awesome Single Player or Co-Op Source Mod. For example, you live in the city and your boss, for reasons unknown, sends you on a mission into the old city (Zombies much?) and you have to avoid the plague through various challenges and such. Sound good (plus you get to roam around the top city for a while :P)?
It looks amazing! But I have a question...
question: can you expand the map size limit? my: underground-dont-press-button-otherwise-underground-collapse map is a bit on the short size...
Not that I know of... You have to just move everything around to make it fit, or you're pretty much stuck.
i really cant wait till this map comes out. when do u think it will be out and wat website?
Given my rate of work, the fact that I'm graduating high school and will soon be going into a very work-intensive art college, and just time I have in general, it could probably take quite a few months to create. Perhaps a year or more.
Underground subway?!
Yes, there will be one. But it will be broken.
Annd, the two halls of the City Hall are almost done! I'm probably going to detail the western hall more (the one you can actually enter).
