Why do so many map makers not compile their maps in HDR? Is it just the look that upsets map makers? 90% of the time, all I need to do is add in a tonemap_controller and compile with HDR.
It doubles the file size.

And HDR only really adds bloom and a better looking skybox anyways.
Cause real men compile with HDR and LDR.
I don't find any good use for HDR. In my opinion it's just painful to watch.

Distributed Vrad, saves your life.

It fucks up everything in GMod, even with a tonemap controller.
If its done right its fine but a lot of noob mappers do not know how to implement hdr right.
If you decided to use HDR people can always .bz2 the map on their download server to cut the file size back down in half..

env_cubemap. or turn your lights down.
Threw this together a few months ago in the EP2 sdk, the only thing wrong when ported to Gmod was the wall texture changed itself.

Very nice. Looks a little off-scale though, can't put my finger on it.

it's because it looks like the door is about half as wide as it is tall, and the powerplug on the wall to the right looks really huge. that and the fact that it looks like the person who took the picture either took it with his penis or is 3 ft tall.
on to the matter of the thread. to hdr or not to hdr. well i think it looks great if you do it right, but i think it looks horrible on big open outdoors maps where it just pains ur eyes. so if u do it right then go for it, but if u cant do it then leave it off.
if you want all the benefits of HDR without it looking like shit > minexposure and maxexposure set to 1
I don't test/compile my maps in HDR until I think the map is near-done, and test it with the lighting. If anything is off I fix it, then I decide which looks better and I keep that one.

HDR actually plays a HUGE role when dealing with maps with little lighting. I'm currently making a horror map and it seems as though the quality of the entire map goes up when I put HDR on, even though there is so few lights.
When I test maps I only compile in HDR, so I can get the lighting for the HDR perfect and then the LDR version should look decent as well

Not always, sometimes in highly-lit (or lowly-lit) areas they seem to 'flicker' in corners. Thats why I do LDR first then HDR to make sure both go well.
