:-D Introduction
Hello all,
In the past I've created some versions of Hogwarts, but always I ended up forgetting about the project.
I thought, I'd plan some things out before I'd go to work.
I am going to use some of my older pieces of work, and since I already started with the project, I consider the map as being under construction.

Here is a showcase of my previous Hogwarts versions, from ugly to slightly better :P

What I am hoping to achieve:
I'd like to create parts of Hogwarts over time, with suggestions made by other people. As Hogwarts seems to diffrent in every Harry Potter movie, I'd like the community to help me with what fits best, and what parts from some versions we shouldn't add.

Cause Hogwarts is kinda huge we can't have everything in it, so I'd like people to suggest some of the parts which should have priority.

When you got a question which doesn't need a quik response, just post in this topic.
If you've got a question which requires a fast response (well faster than the above XD), then post a comment on my youtube vid, and I will get an email telling me someone asked something. ;)
[/release]
So what will change to you succeeding this time rather than just putting it off again.
Cause this time I will create it in stages, rather than to try to create the whole thing all within one month. :P
You should try and keep the interior as close as you can to the films. Use all the films which feature hogwarts for this. I can help you with floor plans and mapping the basic layout if you wish. I already have a fairly basic map of the Fifth floor + couple of the floors of the clocktower for you if you want it:
http://www.mediafire.com/?lqdsxnrmt9l65yu
The layout isn't 100% accurate, and I'm still working on it.
I hope this one lives. This map could be brilliant.
I hope that this attempt goes well.

I downloaded your layout, but havent got time today to take a look at it.
Upcoming weekend I will have some time to take a look, and draw some things out ;)
Planning and drawing things out is like 25% of the work, cuz it prevents to get a mappers block.
Btw, I was thinking of putting some "scary" hallways in Hogwarts.
Anyone ever seen my ghost detector test?

I could easily remake this, as I still know how I made it.
I could use this system for the hogwart ghosts, which randomly fly around.
Some ghosts might hurt you some, others could help.
Ghosts could help by spawning in a special room when a player comes in, he might give clues in secret areas and such :P.
The scenario where the scary hallways could be of use is in the dungeons. It would add a real sense of atmosphere. Also, the Bloody Baron could be an enemy ghost...
Just a thought while doing my school project.
What is the maximum entity count for gmod (hl2)?
Maybe we could create just a small piece, and use it as a jigsaw to create large parts.
For example, a wall part.
This means we could have lots of details in one model, and this model would be loaded only once to the video memory.
Also the modelsa out of view wouldn't be rendered.
We could put world brushes between walls.
This would make it possible for slow pc's to handle the map :).
I am planning to combine an even older project with this map.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW5LEtOC1lU
I am planning to apply this effect on some areas.
As much as I look forward to this, I'm unfortunately not going to be too hopeful.

First I am going to create a plan, then I'll create some reference parts, and then I'll start to map, piece by piece.
In between people can suggest things, or give me references :).
I have to admit, that progress is going to be slow, cuz I really have alot of school projects I need to finish.
I can help you make the plan, also with the basic shape.

Hi, I just took a look at ur VMF.
Nicely done ;)
Correct me if I am mistaken, but you remade this sector:

Are u sure these two places are connected?

Anyways, I'd like to create most of the exterior of Hogwarts as a model.
This will cause lightning problems at some points. But if we would split the outside of each room, from the inside, it shouldn't cause too much problems. Or am I mistaking?
What do you think about this?

Correct. However, that floorplan is completely wrong, both in detail and positioning of the towers. Particularly the North Towers. These are completely wrong. I tried to recreate the Fifth floor corridor, along with the catwalk seen in the final film.

I'm afraid that was an error on my part. When I came to making that part using brushwork only, somehow I made it an invalid solid. I clicked on the fix button, and it disconnected them, leaving a nodraw texture. I always kept putting off fixing them :P

I'm not entirely certain what you mean by this, sorry. Haven't used models as large sections of maps, mainly as detail afterward.
Lets use my "2009.09.29" Hogwarts version as the base shape.
We do use other scales of each aspect of Hogwarts.
Also, that belltower connected to the greattower and that huge tower isn't included in this base shape.
However, this will be included.
My video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL4ue0Jjm9c ) shows a 360 angle of that base shape,
so its nice for reference.
When I made this shape, I did alot of digging :P
If anyone sees errors in this baseshape ( other than that structure which is missing, and connected to the greathall and that huge tower ) please tell :D.

I didn't mean the brushwork :P, I meant if both chambers should be connected.
But as I just read, this isn't the case.
I'm not entirely certain what you mean by this, sorry. Haven't used models as large sections of maps, mainly as detail afterward.
Well models aren't meant to be used as large portions of the map. But this is the only way to have alot of detail, and not hitting the brush limit.
[editline]18th November 2011[/editline]
What we need now, is a floorplan of the main structures we are going to create.
We need to know what has to be inside of each structure to define its size.
If possible, could you send me the base shape hogwarts, and I'll try and expand on it, so then we have a full basic shape?
Well the problem is, that I haven't got the basic shape anymore :(
2009 is while back XD.
But what I meant was, that we now know what the basic layout should be.
So now we can decide where we are going to start with Hogwarts, and decide what has to be in it.
This way we can define this structure's size, and we can create some blocks which represent each structure. From here we can start with the exterior.
[editline]18th November 2011[/editline]
I think its smart to start with the greathall, as this has alot of reference, we can define its size easily.
Seems like a good idea. To be honest though, making the interior first would be far easier. Also, I'm not particularly skilled with 3d modelling programs, bar SketchUp, which I know has a source .smd exporter.

Well, chances are the interior might not fit into the exterior shape we'd like to have. Causing weird hole of nothingness to be formed when we build the exterior around the interior. In my video, the first Hogwarts version, is exactly this.
And you don't have to be skilled in any modelling program.
The exterior ( which is going to be built out of models ), is going to be mostly cubic work.
There is a hammer tool out there which converts .vmf's to models.
So I think we'd be ending up doing exactly the same in a modelling program as we would do in Hammer.
+, we got an extra benefit: We don't have to measure everything, but we can just use hammer references to define our scale of things.
[editline]19th November 2011[/editline]
Things we got now:
- basic exterior shape
We now know how Hogwarts has to look like, and we can pick a point to start.
I think its best to start with the greathall.
No we need to find out whats exactly in this greathall.
I thought there was a library above the welcome area (where people eat, where harrypotter was put into griffoendor).
I know the greathall has 9 small windows and one big window in lenght.

Problem is, which greathall layout are we going to use?

I don't know if this one is correct though.

brushwork looks a bit blocky.
brushwork looks a bit blocky.
To what work are you referring? All work that has been shown till now is only put to use as reference.

Just a quickie I made, showing the very basic shape. I pretty much know the correct floor plan seen in the movies off by heart. The Randwulf one (the one 3 posts above this) is half correct, but it adds in an extra courtyard, which wasn't seen in the films.
If you want to map out the exterior first, fine, but tbh whenever I end up doing that I can never fit the interior in properly.

We gotta make a plan of whats going to be inside of the structure we are creating the exterior from.
And I really like ur picture :O. U got skills :P. Me myself am lucky I can draw something people can recognize XD.
Ok, I gotta work on 4 projects today ( 3 school related ), but I will try to work on this project aswell.
I am going to make a small sketch on what I think should be in the greathall. Problem is, that I don't know whats on the first and upper floors in the greathall. I only know whats on the groundlevel.
[editline]19th November 2011[/editline]
Btw, I remember this courtyard being there in the movies, aswell in the games :O Its the clocktower. The entrance courtyard infront of the greathall isn't where the clocktower is located.

This bit is difficult because the layout is different in the first 2 films as it is in the second 5 films, and that's also different from the books. Which is different from the games.
I think the games have the strongest similarities to the books.
The first couple of games do, yes. Later games (Order of the Phoenix onwards) use the Hogwarts seen in the films.
As for the Clock Tower, I forgot to add that in to the floor plan, I was basing it upon the first 2 films. The problem is, Hogwarts is always changing. Which version should we use? The one seen in the first 2 films, the one in film 3, the one in films 4 and 5, the one in film 6, or the one in the final film?
I began to sketch the greathall out, but each time the exterior is either too big or too small.
Also, I'd like to add things form each movie. On the fly we can think of what to add, and what not.
Also its hard to show the exterior in a few pictures. I will create a small vid where I comment certain things. I'll also upload the vmf for ya.
[editline]19th November 2011[/editline]
Ok here's the quick sketch I made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JepCyhoEwhI
Also uploaded the vmf + vid, so you can preview the vid from your desktop if you might prefer that (like i do).

Ok. I've already started on the basic shape of the exterior of it, so I'll send you that when it's done.
Ok. I've already started on the basic shape of the exterior of it, so I'll send you that when it's done.
Ow thats nice :O, cuz ur the one with all the Hogwarts blueprints in your head XD.
Remember, the interior has to fit inside of it.
The creation of the exterior already defines each interior for a bit. Keep in mind everything is pretty huge :P.
[editline]19th November 2011[/editline]
BTW, I just thought of something which may fix some of our future lighting problems.
The basic shape ur currently creating, can be used to block light.
We could use this shape as world geometry. This has 2 benefits:
1. It lobks light, which otherwise would go through models
2. It block LOS, which prevents models on the other side of the world brushes to be rendered.
[editline]19th November 2011[/editline]
@Abbers100
While I was doing my school project, I found a file with a name I knew I saw before.
I opened, and its my 2009.09.29 Hogwarts version.
The scale's are incorrect in this version, and it uses too much brushes to be used as base structure.
But would you still like to have it anyways?

I know. I've had to redo several bits because of the scale of the thing. I figured I'd do the landscape as well. I'll keep you posted.

Sounds like a good idea. The shadow_control entity also needs to be configured so then everything lines up.
