I'm still learning my way around hammer and in the process have started creating a map I named "gm_cityblock". I wanted some feedback on what I have done so far.

Please try again,
1. Textures are not that great
2. Lighting is terrible
3. Displacements suck
4.Brushwork could use a ton of work
5.I don't know if that is supposed to be a movie theater or just a place to sit down and look at a metal wall...
Over all rating I give it a 2/10 because you actually had displacements and lighting and used brushes.
adding color to your lights and adding a light_env (and an env_sun) will add to the environment so much, I suggest you use it to your advantage.
A few other things to look at:
1) The displacements you have for the lake create that strange shadowing effect if the other 5 sides of the brush are also displacements, select the bottom faces of that displacement and press "Destroy" in the displacement menu
2) Texture tiling - look at all the free space in your map, the textures obviously look like textures, instead of like dirt. The solution? Add a whole bunch of objects there until it looks more realistic
3)Texture choice - I personally prefer custom, clean textures, but do take some time to make sure your texture choice is the best possible
4) look at your architecture - it's boring, there's no flair to it, not even some sort of mood going on, it's just a building with some random exterior bars on it.

He asked for help and feedback not a critic
For "learning your way around hammer" (first map I assume) this looks good so far. Fix the sun though, its very dull. And I think your water texture is messed up.

Sorry but i'll give you a 0/5 because you comments seem rude and are not helpful, instead of just saying whats wrong also explain what he can do, not just being negative.
Now, you've got some interesting ideas in your map, but you need to work on making it look like somewhere in the real world, search in your texture browser for building or build, it will give you some ideas for exterior textures, and also you can maybe try your hand at using the textures to make details. Just experiment with hammer for the time being and remember to have fun.
Thanks for the tips, the water is a problem with my game client, other users report that it works fine.
I think it could use some more interesting buildings
Not that bad, cinema with combine walls = PHAIL
at least you asked for help and didn't just release it as it is now
Brushwork is fairly nice but texturing is icky. Work on that.
Pretty good for a new mapper (I assume you're still in your first maps).
When you have some free time, have a lookie on this website, you will learn a lot.

for JUST mapping. And remember, if you see 3kliksphilip anywhere, IGNORE HIM.
After you compile your map, copy your log and paste it into the box in the website.
http://www.interlopers.net/errors/index.php
It check it for any errors such as leaks, portal errors, missing textures, etc...
Usually I compile without vvis or vrad to see if I have any leakes or errors, and fix those before recompiling.
Keep at it, listen to those who try to help, and ignore the rat bastards who tell you to GTFU or it sucks.
Loving those rounded road corners. Most people don't notice that stuff but for new mappers that stuff is kind of hard and the effort should count.
How would one go around making a music system for a club, I have something setup with ambient_generic but it doesn't seem very tweak-able or well-made.

Thanks, I tried to observe and avoid common trends of new mappers.
Ooh, what songs did you use there, in that video?
As for the mapping side, make sure your ambient_generics are all set to not looped, and that you have named them and used the StartSound and StopSound outputs.
In Hammer, go to OutPuts tab, add output "OnPressed song1 stopsound" and "OnPressed song2 stopsound"

Will this cause any problems apart from with the block it's used on.

The stop sound button doesn't work for either of them,
I have tried what both your posts describe.
