• My first Map. (Incoming Flame -.- )

For my first map, I thought I'd try something ... different. I've been viewing the forums for ages now, but I've never actually made a map. I'm also not creating a new version of construct. I'm actually doing a tetris map. Although, I've hit a brick wall. I've created the layout, but I'm not actually sure what I can do... ALSO: Those are my own custom textures, can I have some C&C on them please? First ever ones... Here are some images: An image from the bottom. I was going to add a doorway in the red rectangle and make a hotel. Inside. Confusing I know, but Inside textures will be changed, (And dev floor.) to fit whatever theme/style I pick. Please ignore the floor, skybox etc. Just focus on the building. What do you think I can put in there? I was going to do a hotel sort of thing, with a elevator going up the far right (Highest Combined Pieces.) but I'm unsure. So I thought I'd come to lovely Facepunch. Hit me with your ideas. (PLEASE C&C, no flaming for me trying a different sort of thing/style for my first map <3 )
It looks like a bunch of hollowed out, textured blocks. Not much of a map, really.
That's why I want ideas on what to put inside it. I was gonna do a hotel. But I wanted ideas from FP first.
do not use shit like -.- on this forum you will get flamed for it. we have emotes here and your map isn't really a map to say the most
Okay, sorry. And I suppose it's not meant to look like one yet. That's why I came here. To see what I could do to it to make it a map.. If you get me..
do not use shit like -.- on this forum you will get flamed for it. we have emotes here and your map isn't really a map to say the most
What? Just stop talking. Also this to is a map. If you can spawn and walk around I believe it is a map. Plus it is a lot better then what most people post here as there first map. I mean at least he changed the textures and made it look neat. Nothing special but hey it is his first map. And to those people who are going to say "Your first map is not an excuse." Go fuck off.
Thankyou nerdygamer. Do you think the custom textures look Ok? Also, what do you think I can do with the map?

I'm not saying that 100% of the time it does, but I just don't see why someone like me would go ahead and decide to pick up and play this map. You need to make it more appealing, maybe some better more tetris-y textures, lighting, scenery.

I agree with Nerdygamer. This is a lot better than most first maps. The custom textures aren't too bad either.

Might do it tomorrow, though. 01:22AM sucks for mapping. EDIT:
Umm just trowing this out there. But maybe you could do a Tetris themed CSS map?
Sorry. You commented while I was posting them two replies. A CSS Map? I wanted to make this for gmod, really.. But d'you think it'd be better in CSS?
This website takes new maps so badly, here's one from another website.
I can tell you've been mapping a bit like you said, as you've gone beyond the plain 6 sided blocks and one big room approach. You seem to have started considering layout and visually interesting brushwork from your pics. There are some things that need to be sorted out however: * Your fog is the first thing that stands out as being not so good. It seems to just suddenly start and then get very heavy very quickly. Play around with your fog's settings so that it fades more gradually from no fog to full fog. I would also suggest a change of colour if you are sticking with the concrete theme you seem to have going. A light grey/blue colour may work better. * You seem to have the same texture in different places for the ceiling, floor and walls. This is a big no-no. Vary your textures. There are different textures that have been specially made for ceilings, floors and walls. Have a look at them and choose differing yet complimentary textures to rexture your map. * You've started placing props but your map is quite plain in terms of brushwork. Hold off on placing any more props until you have added more brushes. Try adding brush-made support beams or pipes to break up plain boring walls or ceilings. Add railings along the edges of the upper floors. * It looks like you are using the light entity to add light to your map. While this is ok when first making your map, there is a differnt way of lighting that will give a much better look and make your map be of a higher quality. Check out this tutorial to see how to do that other method of lighting. Looks a like a quite solid start to a map. Keep going and keep us posted on your progress
[editline]01:36AM[/editline] So to lead from that. What is the aim of the map? Why will people play it? People don't like these (sorry) "Crappy" full-bright maps with boring blocky architecture, Try getting something you have a solid base on and work with that, take this for example: In truth, it's just a cube, but with said cube the person has managed to change it into a completely different shape, to get a block and to change it in ways that make it up to 16 more blocks bigger! I've made items by starting off with a 512*3 block and gradually built the insides into something with at-least 30+ brushes, the result is great and I promise you that if you're concerned about it lagging, beleive me it shouldn't. Take evocity for example, pushes the brush limit but is able to hold nearly 64 players with 100~ ping, that's not the server, that's the map. So just try to incorporate other pictures to your map. And remember this golden rule (of mine) Block - Block the level out, see if you're happy with the results. Add - Add to what you've blocked out, make the geometry more detailed and suited to its environment. Remove - Remove what you don't see necessary in the areas you're working on Fix - Fix your level, optimize it and fix any bugs/leaks/glitches you find.

I'm just saying there really isn't a purpose to it.
I've decided on a theme. I'm going to have it at night, with scenery down the front, and spotlights pointing up towards the tetris architecture. Inside, will be a museum dedicated to the awesomeness of Tetris (How it originated, etc.) It will basically be just a museum about it. The very highest block will also be an observation point, to look out. I will use custom textures & models (hopefully.) for this project. What d'you guys think?
i wasn't saying it was horrible. it, by far, isn't. I'm just saying there really isn't a purpose to it.
Umm ok but that is not the reason why I quoted you. What I did quote you for was this comment.
do not use shit like -.- on this forum you will get flamed for it. we have emotes here
It would be nice having them dynamic, sort of like this http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/498418/
Protip: Don't use "-.-" or any such emotes in your thread titles. :eng101:
Protip: Don't use "-.-" or any such emotes in your thread titles. :eng101:
Protip: To defeat the cyberdemon, shoot at it until it dies. Nice map, but i think the textures could be made bigger. Tetris blocks are made up of 4-5squares. The way your texture is small makes it look as if it is made up of hundreds. Only thing that annoys me is that.
Protip: Don't use "-.-" or any such emotes in your thread titles. :eng101:
i said that and nerdyguy told me to shut up so tread lightly bro
Oh yeah and also you might want to limit the lighting to the top and give it a sort of video game style, like tetris, not garrsmod
It would be nice having them dynamic, sort of like this http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/498418/
That was awesome...
Oh yeah and also you might want to limit the lighting to the top and give it a sort of video game style, like tetris, not garrsmod
Huh? You mean so like it's pitch black at the top? To give the impression more bricks would fall and make it seem more like the game, than Garrys' Mod, yes?

maybe make them a bit smaller , also can we see some pics with a light_environment added
