So, i just made my first map, it kind of feels weird for me, i've been in every single section from Graphics of Photoshop to Modelling and now Mapping, the map was not something big, a little room, with a lamp, yet it was important for me, the reason that i made this thread was for people the feelings they had after their first map and if possible supply us with a picture showing what your first map was.
Well when i made my first map most people feel cocky, I know i did. Can't let your ego go to your head over something you just made, that isn't very good. Don't let others get to you either. Just because they say its not good doesn't mean they are trying to offend you, but they are just telling you, that you need to work on it more.
This was my first 'map', I've improved a lot since then and got the hang of things. I've never released any of my maps, so you can rest assured that this one isn't out there.

Then after a few months, I made this:

And then to this kind of thing:

I like to think I've improved a bit since that first attempt. I think a lot of people start out with a box of some kind before improving later. But at least I learned from it, and you will too.
Actually, looking at that last screenshot now...I see loads of flaws.
My first map was a box and some test props. I didn't feel a thing.
The earliest screenshots I have are of a HL1 map - though it wasn't my first:

For my first 2 maps I was also very cocky. I posted both in the release section and got bashed to death, but then I had the users who actually helped me. In fact I believe Firegod was the one who provided the CC. I followed every bit of advise and now I can't stop mapping. I love doing it!
Let me dig up those 2 maps.

Here's my "shooting range"

...and yes those doors were carved.
I remember my first map, I should remake it sometime
Everything was horribly out of proportion.
hollow box made with default brick texture with a light, spawn, some crates/barrels, and a zombie torso behind them.
What's so bad about carving?
What's so bad about carving?
It's unoptimized as fuck.
Just avoid it like the plague. That's all you need to know.
What's so bad about carving?
Sensation, since you made a fuss on my visitor messages about a rating, allow me to address your complaint.
I rated your question dumb because this subtle question has time after time turned into a shitstorm of stupidity whenever someone asks about it, usually triggering an argument of stupid bullshit that no one cares about.
I also rated your post dumb because you could just used the VDC to find out a shit load of information, or even just googled using more logical terms. Hell you could of just used the search function on here.
A big fullbright box full of info_nodes and weaponless combine soldiers.

Just one room of my first map, and it sucks, Combine theme, badly placed lighting and small.
My first map was a long hallway with a metal texture with a few combine soldiers.
Shhh don't tell anyone i'm the one that was making this. Yes it was my first map too.. you should be able to tell what game it's from. I'm ashamed of what i set out to do with it though because i should of kept it in the dark. I wasn't experienced enough to make anything more of it. Of course these are later revisions of the map but no less than 20-35 hours of experience at that point on these. Reference screenshots helped alot.

My first map was a subway station. It was proportioned and lit correctly and there were a few props in there, but because I was more at home with the TRLE (Tomb Raider Level Editor, hence my name) I turned the electrified track floor into a trigger_hurt instead of putting a seperate trigger above it. I also made the map entirely out of individual 128x128 brushes and textured the sky with nodraw.
An unfinished trainstation.
Crappy never-finished HL2RP map, set on the coast. It was really horrendous, but it wasn't fullbright or anything, just really blocky. Plus, I stole some shit from decompiled maps which I regret doing. I really haven't gotten that better at mapping.
I gave Firegod the first map of mine, oh god how bad it was...
My first map was a square room with brick-textured walls, floor and ceiling, a breen bust, an explosive barrel and a pile of debris.
@Loures i was skyping with him atm you said it,
@Chrille, so was mine
@Diss: Well, just keep trying i guess.
@Stinky: That looks epic o_0.

Holy fucking fuck. I want to live inside your head.
My first map was all these walls and buttons... I felt sooooo proud, until I posted on here, then I felt crap.
Now looking back at it though, I start wondering what on earth I was thinking when I made that.
Anyway, here are the pictures, uh, you might want to cover you're eyes...

You wouldn't want to when the dark thoughts arrive.

i think i peed a little
Just noticed chrome can post on facepunch again, fucking awesome.
Anyway my first map, was made on the default grid size, full bright, off grid, boxes+zombies+guns. default brick texture. Was fucking Awesome the experience of learning how to map in the beginning is awesome.
I don't have any pics of my first map since I made it back in early 2009, but it felt pretty great getting to learn the tools and put together my own map to let my friend look at. I didn't really feel egotistical about it but I was a bit proud that I actually managed to create something.
Basically it was just a small underground highway tunnel with a maintenance room built into it ( think of that one part in Half-Life 2 on the coast chapters with all the zombies and wrecked cars piled into a tunnel. ) Only much smaller and darker.
Anyways it felt kind of cool getting to create something and have someone play on it and discuss it. I'm still working on a L4D2 campaign for that exact reason, to create something for my friends to play and enjoy.
Oh boy

It was shit, but I was damn proud of it.
Prepare to cry

Now I still suck ass but I have been getting better, for the most part I did not spend the past 4 years trying my best to improve so it still looks like shit.
latest release: http://www.gamebanana.com/maps/147282 ( even though this version is months outdated from my version but, oh well)
