I've been looking at quite a lot of maps on Facepunch, and compared to them my map is kind of shit. I would love some contructive criticism for my map, and/or idea for new buildings and such :)

Thanks in advance :)
Ive heard of modest people, but thats just annoying.
Ive heard of modest people, but thats just annoying.
Annoying? Look, I never said I were bad. But compared to maps I've seen here I've got a lot to learn. Let me send you a few topics so you'll understand my point of view.
It was a compliment. Its good. Pictures are a bit odd though.
- Looks very boxy - World abruptly ends/no 3D skybox - Grass looks like vomit - Generally unpleasant to look at Other than that, it doesn't look too bad. I'd recommend brushing up on things a bit before you take another crack at mapping.

Thing about no 3d skybox and ending is supposed, I obviously forgot to say that I'm far from done so it'll definately get added. Thing about the grass is easily fixed since I have a ton of grass textures so I'll change that and try to fix the ''boxy-ness''. I've just been looking at extremely good maps, and thought that I could learn something from this forum :)

And It would be nice if you maybe added lips to the roofs on the buildings
Lips? You mean like a satellitedish or something like that?
I think he means just making the roof go on a bit after the edge of the building.
Lighting is very bad, getting that out of the way will make it look much better overall Don't stretch textures, everything is placed too far away from everything else and if you're going for a city look the streets should be crowded Pay more attention to little details and try to get players to look up more often

I'll reset it and post some new pictures. Thanks for the tip, CC.
The lighting coupled with the stretched skybox makes me sad
[t]http://i56.tinypic.com/wv2zr7.jpg[/t] huehuehuehue The map looks fine, just a little blocky and empty in some places.
For new people starting with making a huge city/rp map is always bad. I did that too and it ended up being shit (Of course I thought it was amazing myself) Try and make something smaller, like just a single house or room. And try to make it look detailed and realistic.
I noticed a few things... Firstly, the roads are too dark (either that or the pavement is too bright). Secondly, a very faint fog would help to visulise the scale of the city. Thirdly... the lighting, drop the ambient value in the light_enviroment or increase the direct lighting value because shadows of the buildings will define the city better. Also, dont use red lights (they're too cliche and are never seen in real life, a blue flourescent light will make the room feel cold, industrial and unwelcoming). On top of that the buildings are quite boring to look at, I would advise reading this... http://www.chrisalbeluhn.com/Building_Layout_Guideline_Tutorial.html (don't be afraid to use extra brushes to define the building, just remember to make it into a model or func_detail afterwards). Just my 2 cents, feel free to ignore me.
In city rp maps this isn't so important, but when placing props you should ask yourself why is that there. Don't just place props for no reason, especially when creating a crash like scene. A crashed aircraft can be creepy, but the effect can be ruined if it hasn't been thought out and looks placed there.
Thanks to everyone who replied so far :) It's been very helpfull for me instaed of those people who for some reason just give my post a dumb thumb thing. Whatever you wanna call it :) I really appreciate it.

Scrap the art design and replace it with a futuristic, noir, dystopian art style.
