• VTFEdit convert problem
    6 replies, posted
I just made over 40 new textures for my map, and when I went to open a texture (saved as .png for transparency) I get an error and it wont load the image. Ive reinstalled several times, restarted my computer, tried different image formats but to no avail. Also, when it did compile a bunch of textures at once (A few days ago) they all come out with the $transparent 1 command in the .vmt. Any help?
If you want to load a .png file in VTFedit you must do File -> Import I believe. If you do File -> Open you must use a .vtf file.
If you want to get rid of the "transparent" 1, then go to the options tab and untick that.

In any case, you can just use the vtex method to convert it. It's a bit tricky to understand at first but here goes: Put your textures at .tga images in a folder named Custom (In this scenario, but any names will do) in this path: Steam\steamapps\*Account\sourcesdk_content\hl2\materialsrc\Custom\texture.tga Put a shortcut to Steam\steamapps\*Account*\sourcesdk\bin\orangebox\bin\vtex.exe in the same folder. Then just drag the .tga texture into the shortcut and it will be converted and placed in the correct folder for whatever game Source SDK is set to. In this case ep 2 so Half Life 2 - Episode 2\ep2\materials\Custom.vtf You will have to make the .vmt file yourself.
All my textures are in .png format.
You can download XnView. It's a free program that can save .tga files.
