Decided for a first map I'd make my street, its a bit of a challenge but I havn't got stuc on anything so far? I thought if I take on a map like this for the first time I'd be able to build some build maps easy. As you can see from the images below I'm running into some problems with textures, and I wanted clean windows with a white frame could anybody link me to some textures? Feedback and advice appreciated :-) Any of you guys ever built your house/street in hammer?
Your walls are too thick, brick walls likethat should be 15 units. You have no lighting i can see and your textures need to be aligned and applyed per face, not per brush. 6th button down on the sidebar- that is the button you use to apply a texture per face.
Thanks for advice, I've got env_sun and light_enviroment in the map, am I doing it wrong? Ive also got an env_cubemap but I'm not entirely sure what that is..
Reminds me of my very first map. It was for Sven Co-op 3.5. I recommend you take a look here http://www.worldofleveldesign.com/categories/sourcesdk-authoringtools/hammer-source-real-world-scale-from-photo-reference.php and here http://www.worldofleveldesign.com/categories/left4dead_mapping/l4d-world-scale-dimensions.php

Also, some of the textures there looks stretched, You should also consider to make blocks that fit the textures as well Like on the house side or the sidewalk.

Can I increase my view of detail in hammer? From like 5 metres way textures are blurry.
Can I increase my view of detail in hammer? From like 5 metres way textures are blurry.
Disable any exterior graphic control panels.

(powers of 2 and all that stuff)
Also, some of the textures there looks stretched
Yep, especially the one to the left of the house, you really need to change that. Standard size of a texture is 0.25 in your texture tool. I would also recommend the valve wiki, and some YouTube tutorials.
It isn't that bad for a first- I reckon you'll be great once you've got the hang of things. For now, you'd better work on the wall thickness, lights and textures. Pretty much what other people have said.
good work for your first map.
I thought it was 16 units usually? (powers of 2 and all that stuff)
it is. probably a typo. [editline]19th September 2011[/editline] also, you have texture lock on. it should only be on if for special things. see the little button that has "tl" in it up on the top bar. that shouldn't be on when you're resizing brushes because it makes textures screw up really bad like that one you have on the side walk to the far left.

I would like to know how you managed to get the street like that. Whenever I try to make a road wide enough the line in that's supposed to be in the middle goes to the left and another line to the right, and how did you make the sidewalk curve?

How to take screenshots in sdk?
How to take screenshots in sdk?
Magical button called print screen on your keyboard. Then paste into a paint program.

The other tl is good to have on if you want your texture to stay in place on the faces of the brush when you move the brush around.

For the sidewalk though, when I made the brush, it just made a circle and it didn't look real at all when I tried to position it.

You already done well by not making a construct/flatgrass copy. Anyways it's not bad for your first map mate.
Magical button called print screen on your keyboard. Then paste into a paint program.
I prefer the snipping tool
