I am pretty new to mapping with hammer and i made a map that didnt go over to well on garrysmod.org. One commenter aid to work on lighting skyboxes etc. i want to make maps that will actually get downloaded. please help.
Its best to keep mapping, experience will make you a better mapper. Its pretty obvious that everyone's first map won't be that well done, unless he/she has a lot of experience.
Well then work on lighting. I found it easier to improve through trial and error.
You do need some work http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=124859

Patience, time and tutorials. Hone your skills, learn about the engine, make a map that you'll have fun with.
Patience, time and tutorials. Hone your skills, learn about the engine, make a map that you'll have fun with.
thanks. i tested lights in a box and i think i could use them for something soon... maybe
Maps are all about the small details, most of the time the small details are what makes or breaks a map. Things like proper texture alignment and door frames and things like this are what will make your map worthwhile. Honestly, instead of making a giant out-in-the-open map try starting with just a building interior type map and build from there.

Start by looking at .vmfs (like the HL2 ones that are included).

DONT GO TO MY SECOND POST! Im working on a v2 for halfgrass and my goal for this map is to get 1000 downloads in 2 months after its release on garrysmod.org. i just need help for smooth brushes, water, fitting textures, and lighting. thanks.
Why did you make it then?
Why did you make it then?
i thought my first would get lost in the 7-8 pages and nobody would find it and i cant find how to erase the second one...
In response to your post in the first thread:
my crappy map got 2 downloads and you obviously dont get what im trying to do.
Yes I do, every new mapper has huge ideas of building huge archipelago's, impossible geometry and the next big thing. Only a few have ever actually accomplished that, but that's after spending years on and off with the map.
im trying to make a grade a map over a long period of time with alot of work because i want to make gmod players happy with my work.
Good for you, don't expect anything like that for a few years at least.
thats why most people upload maps so people will use their work and its not a chore i dont have to do it do i?
You're implying that you want this map to get 1000+ downloads in 2 months, that is a chore unto itself.
i said i didnt need a second post on the one above you derp
No, you said to read your first post in the other thread. Which I did.
A map is about someone being willing to convey their dreams onto others. It is not about money, or downloads, or ratings. It is about making something that looks good and plays well. If you go into it wanting downloads, then you have missed the point.

If you go into it wanting downloads, then you have missed the point.
i know downloads dont matter. i dont even think of getting money, and by "i want people to be happy" in my other post above, that means i am "willing to convey my dreams onto others". and i also know im not gonna make a fantastic map in like 3 hours. i know it will take some time and im ok with that. the wait for making a year-long map is worth the wait. now why dont we get back to the reason for this thread, i need to know how to make this thing happen AFTER OTHER MAPS TO GET ME EXPERIENCED. i said that caps part because alot of people kept telling me that and i am gonna do it. right now im testing for lighting and non-block brushes, texture fitting, and all the things ill need to make it. im sorry i made another thread, i was banned for only a day, thank you garry for that. im also sorry for the confusion for my reasons to map. i do want a bunch of downloads because the work would pay off, or really, the upload would pay off. as long as im happy with my work, its good. EDIT: damn, i feel like a download-greedy little shit. sorry i said all that, i dont care about downloads any more... EDIT: i also know the above post sounded hypocritical. i just dont care bout downloads anymore. thats it. ill work on it and when its done ill post pics. dont hold your breath.
Good, as long as you're willing to put your dedication into it. Feel free to ask other mappers to help out, if you want help with some basics stuff, I'd recommend checking out my incomplete VMF's I released here: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1123672 Obviously they're not complete, but feel free to use them as you see fit, and to practice. They're all fairly well optimized, so compile times shouldn't be a problem.
http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?tag=ironphoenix I also released all my unused vmf's. They are in three packs, archive 1,2 and 3.
Holy shit Iron, you have a lot of vmf's.
Holy shit Iron, you have a lot of vmf's.
And those packs don't contain the more recent ones. I believe in total my hammer folder contains about 10,000 files or so.
And those packs don't contain the more recent ones. I believe in total my hammer folder contains about 10,000 files or so.
I will have to check some out when I get home.
