• Using detail sprites

Recently someone cared enough to help me out by creating custom snowy grass sprites. The sprites came with a .vtf and .vmt called detailsprites. I thought I could just waltz into hammer and apply them onto a surface but lo and behold it was just a texture of six different grass images that laid flat with a transparent background on the brush I applied it to. So my question is: How can I get a texture to host these detail sprites? Specifically ground/snow01. If anyone is to answer this, please be specific because I've never used detail sprites before and probably don't know much about the terms that may used in describing how to make them work in hammer and in-game.
Is there no one that can be bothered to teach this?

Yea I tried reading that, don't know what the hell to do though.
Can someone please explain this to me step-by-step :/
