So, I've been messing around with a few ideas for post apocalypse maps for a while now, and haven't managed to release anything yet. The problem is that i could make a map, and then think that the type is satuated. So i'm going to do a bit of market research. Up there should be a poll if all goes well.
Fire/Volcano- Self Explanatory. The world as it is after a major fire, be it man made, natural or chemically induced.
Virus/Bacteria- Something man made, usually with a purpose that isn't a weapon in mind. Kinda ironic.
Flood- As the polar ice caps melt, the world floods. Those that don't find a nice self-sufficient hilltop starve or drown, or pick up one of the many diseases running riot through this world.
Fallout- A fallout themed map, built similar to cscdesert.
Freeze- Post ice age, touched on by many authors, including Terry Pratchet and Roland Emmerich. This is the big freeze though...not the minor ones. Think Day after Tomorrow kind of freeze encompassing the entire world.
I have theories for more of these...not too sure about fire yet...but an interesting concept none the less.
Voted, should be a nice looking outcome.
I think you should tackle the ice age idea.
It would be good to see if done, but only if you managed to make it look spectacular.
None of this "hey, I'll just add snow to everything". Actually go through, add things like frozen floodwater, crashed and frozen vehicles (including aircraft).
Whatever you choose, make it feel quite surreal.

When have any of my maps looked normal?
Just looked up reskinning and it seems to be quite easy. Should make the fire, flood and freeze looks that bit more epic.
That flood image looks a bit odd. Kinda cool though.
Keep those votes coming...i have a long day at work ahead of me...i'll need to do something :)

That is so cool.
I voted virus/bacteria for a sort of "I Am Legend" map.
Fire! :smug:
Flood.
Amazing how these things wane. I checked it just before i left work an hour ago, and fire was winning, now fallout and flood are tied. Keep the votes coming!
Virus' give me bad memories. Let's go with Fallout.
I think we have a lot of fallout maps so freeze.
Didn't vote. I like realistic themes.

Interesting how the world is ripping society down frequently, and you don't see nature taking back what it's owed as realistic.
The only one that isn't realistic in society now is thermonuclear war.
Man most of these sound cool. I voted fire/volcano but post-flood or ice age would be awesome to. You hardly ever see anything like that – in any game.
I’m less enthusiastic about fallout themed and virus since there are lots of nuclear wasteland maps and No Mercy hospital type maps out there.
I think the ideas for virus/bacteria maps have fallen in to the zombie trap so often that it is all that is left. One idea i had been toying with is making the bacteria a fast reproducer that would eat oxygen, and emit carbon dioxide, making it useful in agriculture.
I also think that people believe that the only type of apocalypse is the kind that ends in nuclear fire. There is very little media about the events that could befall us in the future. For many in England, flood is an extremely realistic scenario. In Asia and America, seismic events threaten to tear society apart routinely. The planet entering an ice age is inevitable.
So..i am going to expand on the theme ideas:
Fire/Volcano/Seismic Events- Added seismic activity because then the map can include very visible (and hollywood) rips in the ground, buckling, and major gas explosions.
Flood: Similar to sb_sunken, but more citylike. Download for sunken can be found here: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=59942
Freeze: I showcased a concept for this in the post apoc challenge. Since then i have worked out a method of creating a whiteout weather system.
Fallout: Started one a while ago, had tremendous issues with the doors and people asking for the fallout 3 props. The idea would be to base it off the van buren storyline.
Virus/Bacteria/Genetic: Something either natural or man made, but not designed to be weaponised. Would not create zombies, or directly kill. Mostly indirect, a catalyst for the events to follow.
I have yet to play on a decent flood map, considering that there aren't to many to choose from. So My vote goes down for flood.
I'll be writing some of the more crazy stuff about post apoc mapping etc on my blog. So, if you fancy learning about social balance and other crazy stuff, check it out:

Freeze- But instead of slow steady freeze, more of a Crysis style overfreeze of death where people are frozen with their arms covering their eyes and over their heads as they kneel in terror.
Freeze. I am yet to see a GOOD ice age map. (gm_winterforest was alright, but it didn't give the pure ice cold feel to it, like large crevices etc.)
Ok...friday has come, as has a bank holiday weekend. I will be starting work on the map soon, so stay tuned for random images popping up in pimpage. The map will be either freeze or seismic. If anyone wants to talk to me about it on steam or whatever, add me on skeeter423.
Volcano/fire, haven't seen many.
This looks split down the middle.

As will the map...
Fun fact...the folder that contains all my vmfs consists of 10,000 files and is 3gb large. I'm sure there will be something useful in there for this.
Do an overgrown town or city theme.
My guess is that you didn't read the poll or either of the main posts.
Anyway- i'm currently building a town and slowly tearing it apart. I'm looking at doing something similar to London just after the Nazi's started to mainly use incendiary devices, but with a lot more underground heat. The ground will be nothing but rough dirt and cracked concrete, steam billowing from manhole covers and fire spreading around fuel leaks.
Buildings would be nothing more than charred remains, only brickwork surviving, and in some cases, just the remains of the chimney.
Violent cracks would zigzag across roadways, visibility would be reduced due to ash in the air.
If anyone wants to suggest anything, now is the time.
And to the above user, fire or freeze, neither would support plant life.
I would say Seismic has attracted the most people...time to change a world...
Reserve name is gm_phoenix, not after my own, but after the bird. It's a symbol of life after death, the sudden end of the beginning, or possibly the beginning of the end. The place is a dirt desert, devoid of life bar a few hard plants. Ash still rains from the sky, and the buildings rot, their owners long gone.
If anyone has any requests for it, please throw them in this thread. The more entertaining ones i will laugh at, and possibly throw them in anyway. I'm sure there will be a few Easter eggs in there to hold your attention :)
Images will arrive soon...and when the map is in such a playable state, maybe some lucky people will get to play with it pre release.
The Blog (http://darkironphoenix.blogspot.com/) will be updated twice weekly now. Not sure what will be up tomorrow, but i'm sure it will be very geeky and bizarre.
You could do a hard rain-esque system for dust storms or something. I like cool weather effects in maps.
Currently i have have a nice shower of missing sprites...damn tf2.
Freeze
