I suck at decorating.
If it's just one thing I can't do, it's this.
You all make nice things but when it comes to using props I can't seem to make anything decorated with them.
Could you give me advice on how I can make something like a Generator room actually look like a generator room?

Grime, oildrums, tools scattered around.
You're just telling me what to use, but I'm asking how do I put it in?
If I used those, it'd all look a mess of bad detail.
and everyone uses crates, pallets, decals, and perhaps some debris if it's an unattended.

oh you mean that. Well just use some physics props like the barrels for instance and put like 3 of them with different skins in a little group and maybe a fourth one lying down next to them. Make an oilspill decal on the floor where the fallen one is. Things like that.

also vents and a shitload of pipes running everywhere
Clutter in general works. I cannot tell you how to put something in as it varies depending on the size and theme of the map. You generally have to use you own judgement when adding clutter...just make it look well used and a little untidy.
Look at pictures of the room you are trying to add detail to. It will give you a sense of what the room actually looks like. Google or the Reference Picture thread can help.
Because we don't know what theme you are going with the map/room (ex. Abandoned, Fairly used), what you put in the room is up to you. However, a general rule of thumb for industrial maps is lots of overhanging pipes/wires, a bunch of oil drums and various other industrial props.
Using decals and props that fit with the theme will make the room far more believable. Anything else would look odd and out of place (ex. Combine equipment in a fantasy map)
