I'm quite sure I posted an image of this map ages ago, but at the time it was simply an entry for a map battle over at Interlopers. However, I've recently been making small additions to it every now and then; coming up with cool little visuals and such to add here and there. So far it's very tiny, but I decided to start expanding it to a full-fledged map for Gmod.

The way I develop maps is totally sporadic, because I have a pretty unstable flow of "mapping mojo" I guess. I often get epic mapper's block, and will stop working on something for a long time, then eventually I'll randomly poke around in Hammer and somehow spontaneously create something useful. I have a tragic weakness of not being able to map from references, and can only create things I come up with on my own. Of course, I can always find inspiration.
Anyway, another thing I started working on is an other-worldly, spacey skybox to accommodate the map. I'm going for a completely surreal look, so I want to give the map a crazy skybox.

I still need to work on it, but it's coming along nicely so far. Feel free to cut that image apart and make a skybox out of it, but you're better off waiting for the finished product. I'll release it if it's done before the map is.
Anyway, I'll try and update this thread as much as possible. I can't guarantee any steady progress, it all depends on my flow. I'm just glad to have found a new, inspiring project.
Tone down that green a bit, it's hurting my eyes.
Looks pretty good though, very unique
Nice art style, it doesn't look like Source.
Great style.. reminds me of Willy Wonker and the Chocolate Factory
(2005 film)
I remember seeing this on Interlopers. Looks good, maybe a little harsh on the green but looks cool otherwise.

agreed, the green is almost neon green, needs to be toned down

Misspelled
It's clearly Willy Wanker

PFft. Shitty compared to original.
And Op, That does look different and original. Very nice looking.
It doesn't even look like source, really great job!
Am I the only person who likes the extremely green grass?
I think it looks unique and quite alien.
Reminds me of the Shivering Isles from Oblivion.

I agree with that but the original doesn't look like the op pictures
The green textures will remain, but I just need to tone down the green lights, that's all. The textures were made using photos from CGTextures, so they're not unrealistic or anything.
The glowing balls are place holders until I can find a more suitable effect. I really like them, but they bug out after some time, and if you get right up to one then it starts lagging ass. Maybe if I can find a really cool animated sprite then I can just use that instead of a complicated particle system.
But yes, the lighting is unrefined currently. The orange lamps will be staying though since I love them so much. I'm using them as markers for entrances and exits so you don't get lost or anything.
PS: I'm trying to find a replacement for the short, blue stone walls. I might end up making them using displacements so they take to the scene better. As of now they're not catching any of the orange or green very well, so they don't blend much. Feel free to give any suggestions.
They're prop_statics, right? Compile with -StaticPropLighting for VRAD and it should help prevent the problem a little bit.
I never thought about that, good idea.

Willy Wonker lol... Reminds me of Wonderland, for whatever reason. I like it!
