http://store.steampowered.com/news/4081/
Two years ago Valve hired the talented team behind the popular top down co-op mod Alien Swarm. Since then they have been busy working on the Left 4 Dead Series, and now Portal 2. However, we never forgot about Alien Swarm and the team has spent a lot of time bringing the game to Source in between their contributions to the other Valve projects. On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam. In addition to the game, Valve will also release the complete code base for Alien Swarm. This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration. If you’ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.

Alien Swarm adds 3rd person camera, depth of field, improved dynamic shadows and a wide variety of gameplay additions to the Source engine.
I'm very excited
Yay! Gonna be awezome. Been waiting for Alien Swarm a long time now.
Wonderful! Cannot wait.
So will these features only work in Alien Swarm or of all Source stuff?
Whee
All
All
Well hot damn! I really hope it doesn't break anything though.
Yeah, that would be troublesome.
Source 2010? I like it. Looks like it may be the same version of engine that Portal 2 will run on, more or less. It wouldn't be surprising, seeing how far Portal 2 developement has gone already.
So will these features only work in Alien Swarm or of all Source stuff?
It'll work on Alien Swarm + all new source engine mods.
What features does steamworks have? Excuse my stupidity :v: [editline]03:36AM[/editline] Oh god, improved dynamic lighting. Why can't monday be tomorrow :saddowns:
Someone re-create Left 4 Dead using the whole top-down mechanic.
Someone re-create Left 4 Dead using the whole top-down mechanic.
Not source but: http://www.mojang.com/notch/j4k/l4kd/
:frown: And I was just working on a fully dynamic lighting project. Oh well. This will make my job easier.
TileGen is primarily a tool for level designers. You can build sets of rooms and corridors, then easily rearrange those pieces to make a final level. You can also specify some generation rules and the tool will randomly generate a level for you out of those pieces. You can build and play the level right from within TileGen, but you generally want to take the output into Hammer for refinement and building into a full campaign.
you can play from the editor that means EVERY LIGHT IS DYNAMIC :dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance: [editline]05:12PM[/editline] or maybe not, but its cool anyway!
No hammer? :suicide: Where is the source from? [editline]01:17AM[/editline] Whos gonna make a day/night cycle map? I know I am.
I have to agree with Firegod with the "No Hammer" Statement.
Steam forum is the source
Hmm...i might have to move frozen skies to source if this update is good enough.
I am slightly confused but also very excited for this
Notice the shadows being cast from the characters, they don't connect with them. The dynamic lights are still a joke in my opinion because of this, it looks like a graphical artifact. Along with that, the lights seem to be used very little, as in, one per room or only one visible at a time. All in all, using these dynamic lights at sharp angles look like shit. I don't think there is dynamic sunlight as well.
This looks interesting.
This looks interesting.
Of coarse, but I'm just a little confused why everyone is giving their hopes up. Also, there is absolutely no sign of an omni directional dynamic light in the videos, there is another thing to get pissed about.

If Garry's Mod is going to be updated to Source 2010, I hope he adds omni-directional lights. Don't count on it though, Garry doesn't give two shits about anything but his precious sandbox gamemode that gets boring in a month. Look at detail grass sprites for example, the old bugs still exist (grass sprite textures cannot be in a custom location, and they have to be 512 x 512 or else they don't work) and there is still yet to be support for swaying grass. Yet, fixes to all these problems are addressed in the wiki.
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god! :buddy:

He has no control over people's projects, he keeps adding shit to Lua. Even the fact that he added Lua support for whole new Gamemodes to Garry's Mod shows that he gives at least some shit about other things besides Sandbox. He's not stupid enough to be under the thought that Garry's Mod was a success for anything besides custom gamemodes. RP is probably GMod's most popular aspect. You may hate it, but that's not Sandbox.
wahay get in there! Looking good, looked around some of there effects, some of them may not please me but we shall wait and see.

And like I mentioned previously, why can't he fix things such as that?
fucking sweet
