Alright to start this off with with a bang i give you my story for making this pos.
Ok so, as a sdk beginner as of 4 or so weeks ago I contemplated making a map that would teach me all I need to know about making easy Garrys mod maps. I also wanted a map that i could build anything I wanted on without having to change maps "cause that takes me forever." So taking the idea of Flatgrass and most likely tons of other beginners i started my personal map. As of two weeks ago this is what i have. Sorry for image quality in advance i sadly use a laptop.

sorry about the last picture, it will be explained coming up.
I am a shy mapper so I have only shown a few advanced build friends and newbies the map "as you can see in the last picture." Details of the map include a sheltered spawn area, high skybox, ramp for jumping aircraft into the air, hills for off-road vehicles, a deep water area for boats/submarines, and plenty of open space left.
The whole point of this map is to have a good learning experience in map making for myself and possibly a decent Flatgrass variant.
I like criticism so long as its good, not mean/ugly/unhelpful. I am open to putting something useful into it if wanted. Well that's my map post for facepunch may i have some idea's/help?
The map looks incredibly boring. If it's purely meant as a flatgrass remake, then I really can't say too much about it. Try something new. Start with a nice, small room and work out a fully detailed builing. Work with lights, decals, textures and props to set a mood.

yea i do see what you mean there, but its Garrys mod to me the only interesting thing is the building not the map.
I'm not a mapper, so I wouldn't know, but I've heard of level designers having one map that they continuously work on that demonstrates what they've learned over a long period of time.
I believe gm_bigcity was one of these maps.
Maybe a little play-around-with map would be beneficial to your growing.
Its a good start nethertheless, at least you have lighting. Do look at reference images of buildings and make it look like a real place. Make it look gorgeous rather than the normal flatgrass/construct remakes.

Not true. My first proper release was planetfall. Whilst not good in itself, it sparked shadowsand's version, and mine a few years later. I was also the first person to release an underwater build map, of which has been lost to the depths of time.
Whilst gmod is about either building or rp, the style can be manipulated to make it new or interesting for the player. How about a build map set in the desert with a few ruins, maybe a nice bunker or two. Or a water map where the build area has a runway and dock facilities. Don't let your view be narrowed, open it wide. Look out at the world and warp it to suit your vision.

yes that's what I am going for thanks for understanding :D
I really didn't know gm_bigcity was that, but it seriously is pretty good. I heard it somehow goes out of the hammer bounds though?

Thank you, the lighting in the map is like late day style " the purpose of that is because when im up late the bright light kills my eyes."
I shall do that and hopefully make this the best remake there is out there eventually.
Please read my post. Please do not make a remake.

heh I didn't see your post when I started :P
by the time I get done with this, it probably wont even be near a remake.
im thinking of adding stuff into it, like maybe a small town fit with roads, countryside style, and a train track.
As long as you develop your skills with hammer and improve your understanding on how the tools work, it does not matter what maps you make. But not every map will be accepted by this forum. Flatgrass remakes are one of those. I suggest you find a reference photo and start to make that. Or you could mess around with the different entities and see what you come up with.

Nice start, but a 3D skybox will make it look even better.
