• Set some standards will you!? FUCKING RAGE

Why the fuck is there no release requirements for maps? HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of blocky maps, over-resized textures, over-used ideas/maps, re-de-decompiled_maps_d.vmf, stolen brushwork, wrong lightning, glitchy placement. This causes whining, heartache, bloodboils, strokes worldwide. SET SOME STANDARDS WILL YA? How about 300h/atleast on record w/ Source SDK for starters. And a history of at least TWO creditable maps. Also mapping should be something to prove a point and something that you can achieve with computer modelling for fuck sakes, I've seen tens of "FLATPLANE_COPY_OF_FLATGRASS_V666_MORDOR" then theres a footer "YOU MUST CREDIT ME IF YOU USE MY MAP". 10y.old kiddos trying to convert Source SDK mapping into fucking CounterStrikeSource2D-I-Can-Draw-A-Rectangle-Edition-Kids-Born-In-1997 For fuck sakes get a hold of yourselves.
Because people need feedback on what maps they're making, it's hard to see your map in it's glory/shitiness when you've spent 6 hours straight looking at it.
Welcome to the mapping forum. You are safe here. The first released map is an important step here. We assume that when they release a map that they want criticism. You cannot set a standard for when that time is right. And what do you expect us to do? Start banning for posting fullbright boxes. Most of the time, the fullbright boxes are released soley on garrysmod.org, which is out of our jurisdiction. In that case, it is something to take up with the admins on garrymod.org, not us.
everybody has to start somewhere
Get ahold of yourself!
Doesn't take me 300 hours to make a good map. Not even 100. There will always be failures here, and people who have no standards of quality. But that is the reality that is humanity and this planet.
Quality over quantity.
Also, what's there to stop people disobeying the standards and blindly releasing maps anyway?
How can you make mapping standards? Everyone must comply by:
I disagree. We all have rights to make maps, and we all have rights to release them. Facepunch... no different! If you can post a map, so can I. This is in support of those of us who (like me) are (ranging from) bad to okay mappers.
Ive seen loads of first maps that are better than most 'experienced mappers' maps. Your pretty prejudice with your post. Also your raging over nothing, stop whining.
I think that crappy fullbright pieces of trash should just be deleted off garrysmod.org. It's mapping section is full to the brim of just garbage 2 minute maps.
My two rules If your map doesn't have a light_environment you are not allowed to release it. If your map is a flatgrass/construct remake, you are not allowed to release it.

Apart from the construct part, some are quite nice for what they're supposedly to be used for. unless it uses Sky_day1_01 Also just putting a light_environment doesn't work, It needs variables.

I agree that everyone has a right to post maps, but I think that it should be sorted through before maps are released.

I'm not saying they shouldn't revise their maps, Terragen, but if they do and it's still considered low quality... They've still got their rights to freedom. :patriot:
I'm not saying they shouldn't revise their maps, Terragen, but if they do and it's still considered low quality... They've still got their rights to freedom. :patriot:
I know, but it amazes me how oblivious people are in instances such as "Oh I made a sweet hollowed box, I should release it!" Yet you know they see maps such as Gm_Apocalypse or other good maps and don't even think that maybe their map is rubbish. That is why I do not feel bad because you know damn well those people see good maps and yet ignore the fact they're releasing a hollowed box with brick textures.
People learn from their mistakes, but if you think it's not just FP that gets all these maps, other websites do too, and while the response from FP isn't always the greatest there can be a lot of help gained if people didn't just blindly smack it off without giving good C&C, a rule should be that anyone saying "Shitty hollowed box with nothing in it" should be banned for an hour for "why reply" as it isn't helpful and only ruins the OP's motivation.

You want feedback, then make a WIP. It does not need a thread in releases nor deserve a thread if it's a pile of rubbish. I think if it is a horrible blocky map, it should be moved to Mapping section so people can comment on it.
That is true. But you have to remember that when they're a new mapper that they're usually young so what we see as crap may look like a masterpiece to them.
That is true. But you have to remember that when they're a new mapper that they're usually young so what we see as crap may look like a masterpiece to them.
Nope. Just dumb people. When i was young and i made my first couple maps i was like wow this sucks compared to official source maps. They were terrible so i never released them. People just lack common sense.
we should have a forum for shit mappers
I'm against Flatgrass remakes, and anything too blocky and fullbright. Not all Construct maps are bad, I find that some look pretty nice. But I think that everyone should be able to make what they want, even if it is bad. Theres nothing wrong with a bad map- as long as it is for personal use only.
I agree with the opening post. I think released maps should at least be good. The excuse "oh well all new mappers need criticism" well we have a Pimpage thread exactly for criticism, go figure. There's no need for someone guy that's been mapping for a week to release his first map with no player start, shit lighting, nodraw applied nowhere, etc. Bottom line is, there's no use for all these shitty maps. The only purpose they tend to serve is accumulating dumb ratings. [editline]wut[/editline] While I'm raging, I'm sick of seeing help threads being created because people think they're issue is that important. It's not like we have a question megathread or anything. I'm also sick of seeing threads being made about a map that has four brushes with dev textures applied and claiming "it's early in development." Then wait until it's further into development, asshole. Also a little off-topic. I'm sick of every CS:S map (especially for Zombie Mod) being complete utter-shit. I'm even more sick of people praising these shit maps. I'm even further sick of communities recruiting a fucktard mapper, labeling him "Clan Mapper," having him edit these shitty maps, adding a cute cs_shittymap_<dumbfuckmapper'sname>_editV3_alpha_001_beta_002 at the end of the map's name, then having the entire server think he's a mapping genius for adding carved brushes everywhere. I'm done, and still pissed off. :bang:
Nope. Just dumb people. When i was young and i made my first couple maps i was like wow this sucks compared to official source maps. They were terrible so i never released them. People just lack common sense.
Agreed, people here really do lack common sense.
Why not just have 2 release sections? People make their topic and moderators decide in which release section it goes? We can have a section called "First attempts" and "Full Fledged maps" Reason I never released anything is because I never finished any maps, they were merely attempts and unfinished projects. I don't go and rush the last 20% of the map just to be able to release it.

It's as if only certain people are allowed to release it. [editline]03:19PM[/editline] I completely agree with Cruma. He has made some very good points.
