Does anyone else get really paranoid with map files of larger projects? For example, for my most recent map, I have at least ten different vmfs all from different stages with another redundant folder. I also save a separate file to compile with the vbct and don't overwrite those so I have ~30 different VMFs that have been run through the VBCT. I'll often just arbitrarily start a new nomenclature or change directories.
Does this happen to anyone else?
All my files are kept on a separate disk to my os and steam. As that disk doesn't get used so much, it is the least likely to go. Unlike what happened with my games drive, 750gb drive died with all my steam on :(
I save copies of my major map files to my flash drive every so often, just in case.

THIS. ALL THE TIME.
I have all my maps named as somemapname_v#b% where # is version number and % is build number, means I have save file for every compile. I learned that hard way by losing giant vmf that I was working on for year. It was totally spoiled by hammer when I tried to overwrite map and it crashed while saving. And by totally spoiled I mean it was total mess of random bytes. It wasn't bsp format, I checked.
I get all paranoid when it comes to a betatest, or worse of all, release...
From time to time I make backups to external HDD. Just to be sure.
VMX is a backup save you can use, but transfer the maps every now and then if you're paranoid.
I create a new folder everytime i edit the map so that if it does break, i can just open up the previous save, its also on my nas which is least likely to die since i've just got it.
I do a backup every few weeks, or before I do something that might be risky. (like installing new hardware.)
simple 4gb thumdrive suffices.
I do it every time i create a room...
Real men don't make backups, but cry when everything is lost.

Yeah because of 200+ hours wasted
v1-0
v1-1
v1-2
v1-3
~
And so on, everything in the same folder :v:
I'm not a mapper, but it seems like it's so typical for a mapper to try to map something, spend weeks on it, then his HDD dies and the map is forever lost. I can honestly say I've experienced mappers tell me this at least 4 times
Maybe it's good to be careful. You say paranoid, so it sounds like you think it's a negative thing to back up your map when it's not.
better safe than sorry

better badass than safe :smug:
No but seriously though I had steam (or something else) fuck up my folders some time ago and a whole load of maps just vanished. It was annoying as fuck because it was most of my recent work, so I was left with these horrible "OLOLOL_ZOmBIE_inVaSiON^^_1337" maps that were like 4 years old.
Now I save maps to my sdk_content folder and another folder on my external drive. I don't want that shit to happen ever again :colbert:
I save all my big projects into My Documents and occasionally back up to a flash drive I keep disconnected from the computer.
I usually just have one save but that's only because I only spend around 10 hours on a map, get bored, and then start on something completely different.
I use windows backup to back up that stuff. It will copy all my stuff to a seperate harddrive. Also i copy the latest backup file to a seperate flash drive every now and then. Bought two 16 Gb ones, mainly for custom content such as sounds and textures.
I put all my maps in one folder, and when I reinstalled windows I thought I had them all backed up online. After formatting and reinstalling, I checked my link for the download only to find "File not found."
"oops"

"oops" would be an understatement..
Man I threw all my .vmf inside of a dvd (wouldn't fit on a CD, too much space) and I had about 2 gb left on the dvd. Then I Installed windows 7. I fell happy because if anything gets corrupted, I can just load off the dvd. or maybe reminiscence when I'm older of the stuff I used to make.
I always chuck my .vmfs on the 1TB SSD Drive I have in my machine it has a lower chance of failing compared to my regular SATA Drives.
