I am building a fireplace in a map and I would like to know if I should make the firewood/charred wood with the block tool or make/download the models myself (unless there is already the models in HL2, HL2:E1, HL2:E2, HL2: LC, CS:S, L4D2, and or Garry's Mod).
It depends on the level of detail you want to achieve. If you want to go for a halflife2-styled approach, some brushes and a displacement for the ashes is probably fine, but if you want high detail, you should make a model.
It depends on the size for the fire and the impact on the scene. If it's one of the focus points in your scene, you should try to get it more detailed.
Also, consider some particle effects like embers and heat distrotion...
If I'm not mistaken it's either CS:S or CS:GO that has a fireplace model available for use (albeit I don't think there are any logs in it, but it's a good start).
Ok, thanks.
You can also search for wood gibs in the model browser and place those as logs in the fireplace. It'll be more detailed than using brushes at least.

I thought about using gibs but I couldn't think of any good ones to use at the time. The only ones I know are there are just the broken table/chair gibs.
