• Protecting packed content ? (.Bsp)

Is there any way to protect content that is packed into a bsp file? I know there are ways to protect the map structure by altering the bsp so people have a harder time decompiling etc. but can I also protect custom (self-made .. lots of time put into them) models and textures? For example is it possible to alter the textures vmt to show just black or something when they are reused but the textures still show up fine in the map? I know there will always be ways but I just want to make so complicated it's just not worth it.
Stupid idea but you could make 2 skins and make the first skin resemble a missing texture and make the second skin the real texture. I'll assume that content thiefs are dumb enough to fall for that. I know I would
check out 5. obfuscating the BSP textures http://www.tophattwaffle.com/protecting-a-map-from-decompiling/ basicly it will turn all textures to nodraw when the bsp is decompilied not sure about models thuogh
your work probably isn't good enough for you to actually need to obfuscate it in any way. people that produce better content give their stuff away for free.
Thats really harsh man, tone it down a notch the guy just asked a question..
The answer to is it possible to obfuscate the actual visual assets is: nope But I agree with Zelpa in that it's a question that shouldn't be asked in the first place.
I was expecting reactions such as above. Generally I was just interested in what is possible. Protecting your .bsp file seems to be fine so I dont get why trying to protect models and materials is wrong. Yes my packed content isnt good enough for its own release. As you would expect. Most of it is made to work with the map they´re designed for and are not anything special. But seeing your textures beeing slapped to every other surface in rp_venator_xyz_v2b_d is just frustrating. They do require time to create. If people are ok with reuploads edits and content being used in half motivated maps thats great for them and I would love to be able to do the same ... but I dont. Im happy to give away what I have created if the person using it has a good reason and will actually create something new and exciting with them. If someone is still interested in this topic or has any ideas feel free to post :)
Then just release your assets as a standalone file and request that people credit you when they use them. Better to operate in good faith and be let down from time to time than to be sneaky and get your shit ripped anyways. People will support the former, not the latter.
