• Looking for GMOD Suicide Barrels Maps and Mappers
    63 replies, posted
Recently I revived the old "Suicide Barrels" gamemode, and while I have fixed the gamemode itself up pretty nicely, I've found the map options to both be lacking and often glitchy. Namely I have two major problems: sb_pyramid doesnt have enough spawn points so players spawn inside eachother sb_shitbox has floating barrels on the bottom level so players can tell which barrels are players Also in general people have been wanting more diversity, and maps to replace ones that have inherent problems (too open, too campy, etc.) I would do the mapping myself but I use a mac and don't have enough space to install windows (also I probably wouldn't be very good at it) So, I'm looking for two things. 1. If you have any suicide barrels maps that are not posted online somewhere or a better version of one of the maps above, shoot me a link. 2. If you are good at mapping, the whole suicide barrels community would be very gracious to have your help making some new good maps and fixing those that have problems. The gamemode can work perfectly but it still wont be much fun if the maps are lacking. Any map you make will be posted publicly so anyone starting a barrel server later on can get the maps from a central place. Also it will probably be a fun task since the maps are fairly simple and you get to do work that will directly improve other's lives. If you are interested just leave a reply here so we can get in touch. Anyway that just about does it, thanks for reading and feel free to check out Suicide Barrels if you haven't yet since its quite the fun gamemode. - Gus
Post links to the current maps so we know how they should be designed
All of them can be downloaded here: http://mc-gtb.com/sb/maps/ The goal is to encourage barrels being able to blend in with their surroundings. Usually that means plenty of decoy barrels strewn about and no linear spaces too open or too flat. This makes players have to cover multiple directions and thus look away letting hiding barrels approach. I would say barrelmania is done very well since it has the water (trolly features always fun), interesting design, and no space too large to be camped easily. Both the killing rooms are also done well, they have a good balance for gameplay. Pyramid is a questionable one, it is definitely a bit too open, but since it is unique and the top of the pyramid creates interesting gameplay, its worth keeping around. Maze is also a good one for its uniqueness. Shitbox is very hard to do well, we need a map for when there are not many players, and also one that just encourages fast and crazy gameplay (hence the name), but it cant be too sided with either the barrels or the humans.
Looks neat!
I'll look into making a map
I'll probably start working on one, but it might be a little shit since I'm starting to learn hammer.
i will look into my old hdd, maybe i still got some old maps.
Thanks guys :) Just a couple notes: 1. Make sure the barrels cant actually explode. Someone made a new version of shitbox (where the barrels weren't floating) and on the first round the whole map just exploded. I'll admit it was pretty funny, but not practical in the long run. 2. Make sure there aren't any too good camping spots. One player shouldn't be able to put the entire approach area in their field of view. 3. Have plenty of spawns. It doesnt matter which team spawns where since even if a barrel spawns right next to a player, the player has at least 2 seconds to shoot them before taking much damage. 4. And finally, have fun with it. It is supposed to be a silly gamemode so adding silly features is definitely recommended. Whatever you can imagine that might make for fun gameplay go ahead and add it.
I was going to Private Message you, but you seem have it disabled. Would this layout work for Suicide Barrels? I would like to know before I begin any major development. [t]http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/437195915656502426/48DCFF72E3263934C348C645A20F978124BF5AE3/[/t]
You should check out some Suicide Survival maps.
I remembered SB being super fun, so I'm also playing around with an SB map. [t]https://s.gvid.me/s/2015/06/29/bH2753.png[/t] Other Screenshots.
Looks really cool glitchvid! I especially like how you mixed the classic suicide barrels orange/gray theme subtly amongst your own more dark and mysterious theme. Also it might degenerate into someone sitting in the bottom left corner watching the 3 entrances for barrels coming in. In general no layout can be written off as wrong, the map as a whole just needs to encourage good gameplay (interesting map features, no overly powerful camping spots, plenty of ways for barrels to hide, etc).
Bump hopefully to get updates from those working on maps.

Sorry, Rust and Homeworld ate me for a week. I was using the dev textures since that's how I brush stuff out early on, but I can redo that if you want.
@OfficerLamarr I think this map is a bit small, but since I like the idea of the containers so much I think you should just take this and use it for the 2 side wings in the overview picture you originally posted. So each wing would have 3 doors (as your image suggests) leading to other smaller rooms. I would recommend using the small rooms to add some diversity to the map. Maybe one of them could have a bunch of wooden boxes that you could crouch jump on to? Maybe even make the stack of boxes hollow on the inside with a hole in the top so people can fall in and try to shoot barrels falling through the hole in the ceiling. Kind of a like a little fort. Oh also, for the container part of the map, the short sides of the rectangle have a good number of barrels, but the long sides (the sides that have the openings to the containers) dont have any barrels so a barrel couldnt hide there. Make sure that barrels are spread pretty much over the entire map. I hope you continue working on this because what you have now seems like it could be developed into a really cool suicide barrels map. @glitchvid The bottom floor in the video seems like it could use some barrels. Otherwise though that map looks absolutely brilliant. I particularly like the moving platform. If you have a version I could fly around in, I'd love to check it out. I dont really know what dev textures are, although I will say that I would prefer a map that doesnt require the users to download something/have extra source material.

I made this one a long time ago... It has a bit crappy balance but looks cool. [THUMB]http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/560940860670089681/22CBA81C4AA52AF435076EF073A6751AFF7EAF7B/[/THUMB] Download from dropbox

That's why I liked your original screenshots because it had a new theme but still used the dev textures subtly to show players that it really is a map for suicide barrels (familiar textures). I loaded up the map and the first thing I noticed was purple and black checker. I think its because I don't have CSS textures. Ideally it would only use textures native to garrys mod. Next I noticed a really nice creepy feel the map creates. Seems like it will go great with not knowing whether the barrel in front of you is about to kill you. I then walked around and took some screenshots to help with feedback. For the moving platform rails I felt that the wall should continue to cover the rails since the bump makes walking in that area a bit awkward. It would also help separate the moving platform so barrels could hide before coming out into the room. Also for that room I felt it lacked barrels. There were a few spots actually in the map that seemed to be lacking. In general the entire map should have a barrel every square meter or so to allow barrels to hide really anywhere. Then just some random things: This corner seemed like it could be too good a hiding place. It's not that a barrel couldnt kill a person there, it's more that it's so dark that the barrels likely would never think to look, leading to a stall where everyone is looking for the person. It is definitely fun to be playing hide and seek at the end of a match, but this might be simply too good a hiding place. This piece of scenery seemed very interesting, but seeing it made be want to jump on top of it and I found I could not do so. I'm not sure what the collision boxes on it are like, but if it could be possible to jump on it that would be more ideal. And finally, this camping spot I liked because it required some parkour crouch jumping to get to, but I feel it could be overpowered. Especially if two people camped there together they could cover the opening pretty cleanly. The only way it wouldnt be over powered is if it was close enough such that a barrel could time it to blow up right as they appear from behind the wall. In other words, a 150 magnitude explosion from the railing would have to damage a player sitting in the corner. Overall, I think this map will be great for encouraging more stealthy barrel gameplay. Many of the maps currently out are a bit too open, leading to barrels just swarming trying to evade bullets rather than sitting patiently waiting for the time to strike. Really fantastic work so far! [editline]9th July 2015[/editline]
1080^60FPS yes. Anyways-- I've never played GMOD suicide barrels. Seems interesting. What's it about?
Basically its an infection style game. Everyone spawns as a human with a pistol except for one person who spawns as a barrel. The map is covered with decoy scenery barrels that do nothing so the player controlled barrel, if standing still, can blend in. A classic strategy would be to wait patiently as a barrel until an unsuspecting human walks by, then initiate a suicide sequence paired with a satisfying "yalalala" sound and blow the human sky high to turn them into a barrel. If the humans survive for 3:20 they win, if the barrels kill all the humans they win. Its quite fun and I'd recommend trying it out, you can find a server up 24/7 in the gmod server browser. The lighting is really nice. I also was initially worried about it being too open, but the slanting down walk ways make it so you cant see all paths of approach from the corners. Even the flatter section bellow the walkway is susceptible to barrels jumping through the walkway's windows and kamikaziing down. I'll have it up and running on the server asap, seems like it'll be a lot of fun.

Then why not add more spawns before giving out a download?
Then why not add more spawns before giving out a download?
I'd like to fine tune it before it gets used, limiting spawns and making it useless is a way for me to do that.

Also maybe two barrels right below the sewage grate. Totally up to you if it messes with the aesthetic, but might be fun for humans to try and get out to it and use it as a camping spot. Lastly, this corner which I mentioned looks a lot better, nice job.
Checked it out again, found the following:
Alright, this is probably the final version before I upload it to workshop and release the vmf: https://s.gvid.me/uw/pub/dl/fp/sb_manufactured_pb3.7z Tell me what needs to be changed.
Dumpster in the sewage, another great idea. It adds the island, and the other garbage going along with it makes the sewage pit look much better than before. The only thing I notice is that the map seems darker. I'm not sure if its just my client, but on single player it is a bit too hard to see. Darkness is good, it makes it easier for barrels to hide, but in these screenshots the darkness takes away the maps texture and most of my screen is just black. Side note: I've asked a bunch of people to help me with this but everyone seems unable to. We have this map called sb_pyramid, its certainly not a perfect map, but it is unique and quite fun. The trouble is that the map only has like 8 spawns for some reason, so whenever we play everyone gets stuck inside one another and gets killed by barrels. Is there anyway you could, when you have some free time, fix this map by adding more spawns (hopefully like 35 to be safe)? Perhaps I shouldn't push my luck since we are already so lucky to have the awesome map you are working on now, but if you happen to have the time, fixing up pyramid would save us a lot of frustration.
Alright, should be good to go: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=480582967 [editline]2015-07-14[/editline] VMF is now available.
Downloaded and put on suicidebarrels.com, thanks a lot :)
