I hope the forums community is a lot more sympathetic and helpful than the all chat in-game.
I am not new to Rust, I have about 400 by now although the first 100 hours or so were spent in official servers which was a huge mistake. I play solo 90% of the time, and now stick to solo/duo/trio community servers. These are the things I have learned the hard way so far:
1) rush a spear, or try to rush a bow if possible
2) pick a decent spot on the map to build
3) always have an airlock
4) always rush your base to full stone
5) don't leave your door(s) wood too long
6) play like a bitch to survive because almost everyone is in groups
I just want any tips I can get to get better at the game. I seriously like the game, and I am ashamed to admit it but I get so emotional with this game. Its hard, especially playing solo. It is so damn hard. You have some players whom got over 1000 hours in the game and within an hour of the game they easily got xbows, full wood gear, waterpipe shotguns and usually are in a group. I get wrecked left and right and it sucks. A lot of times I get wrecked by neighbors which make it all the worse. I am seriously thinking about uninstalling the game, not because I don't like it but because it is so hard for me to deal with constantly losing. Any advice?
Learn to lose.
That's more than essential in rust. If you can't handle losing rust is not the game for you.
Suggestion for the game? Practice w/e weapon you're using the most for hours. Non-stop. Be better at using it, be better at dodging it, this way you'll see how people start to try and dodge and you can play against that.
For not raging? Grow up. Learn to lose and when you do, think about what you could've done better. Nothing else.
Im a newb, 68hrs, play solo and suck so much at pvp.
My tips,
1) when you see another player coming towards you open up communication. Being friendly to other players will increase the chance that they wont kos when you dont want to fight(like me cos i suck).
2) do short runs naked with just the 1 tool. This is how ive done this wipe 2 days ago. take out only axe, hit 4-5 trees go home. repeat with any resource. Scrap is the same but i take a bow incase i get a lucky plus its uber cheap. This way you wont lose anything if someone kills you while farming.
3)dont be greedy. Goes hand in hand with my above tip. Hit a couple trees then go home. Id rather die and lose 5-10mins farming than lose 20 or more mins of your hardwork. Same with scrap. I lost about 400scrap and 50hq metal today cos i was greedy. Was all ready to go but decided to check 2 more crates, both emtpy and as i was running out another player comes and dead.
A few quick random things off the top of my head:
When you spawn in fresh, get the hell out of the teir1 zone and move as far away from it as you can, while maintaining some relative distance to a monument or road, so you can continue to farm equipment and scrap.
Set limits to how long you carry a semi-full inventory.
With over 1k+ hours, I don't farm resources anymore, I farm other people who've already done it for me. Too many players stay out with full inventories.
The act of farming in RUST is noisy and you're forced to move around a lot, unfortunately this is ideal for players with predatory play styles. They sit up at high vantage points waiting for something to catch their attention. Even worse if there's a pack of people that will pincer you.
Be aware of where you are at all times, and always have an escape plan. (I keep high walls in my inventory so I can drop them the moment I know someone's spotted me.)
im 300 hrs and in the same boat... solo its pretty insane...
(I use exactly same tips as you are)
1) there is the "location" meta
2) there is the "building a proper base(s)" meta
3) there is the PVP meta
(optional) 4) is the "social" meta - with who do you make friends, and who you kill/piss off
At least making 1 friend and converting to a duo makes a huge difference...
I'll gladly join this group haha, thanks for the advice by the way. My in-game name, and Discord name is "Nosnide", shit you might have already seen me complaining in the game. I tend to vent through the chat too much for my own good lol.
Also, thank you to everyone else. I always kind of knew to not stay on the outskirts of the map, but I usually did. This is probably why my biggest problem is having groups move in next to me and make Rust life miserable. I will experiment with the new knowledge.
