Hello everyone, I've recently tried out linux (mainly Ubuntu) and realized "Oh crap gmod is released for linux" so I install steam, then gmod, and all the addons download with no problem (about 400 or so). However when I load certain maps (Like the tornado maps, fnaf maps, mainly maps with alot of assets) it crashes with no error or report. Also if I do load into a basic map (like flatgrass) it will load, but if you load the playermodels, load alot of items in the Q menu, or even just spawn alot of props, the game will also crash. Now after a few looks on the internet I found maybe changing the heapsize will help, I have 32GB of ram so adding some shouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately that did not help. So I'm not sure what is different with the linux version than the windows edition of gmod but it's a real downer especially since I want to be able to use Ubuntu as my main OS. All the other source games work just fine with no issue so idk what's up with gmod but I hope this gets fixed pretty soon.
Have you seen the Crashing on Linux thread and/or tried turning down the video quality a bit?
I have the game running on Max settings (Using an RX 480 here) and I'll go check out those threads you mentioned. Hope it works.
@IceGT i tried low graphics + pulseaudio 8MiB shm size. Gmod just closes after first frame rendered.(no motd window, no errors)
Weird. Which distro are you running, and which drivers do you have?
Oh, multicore. I'll try single core mode.
I'm looking at that integrated GPU... if I recall correctly, if OpenGL runs out of memory to use it'll just crash and die. Do you have a dedicated GPU?
Hey - I'm the creator of the "Crashing in Linux" thread. I still crash while playing Garry's Mod either getting some dx8mesh error, a lua panic out of memory error, or just crashing with no error while loading in. I have a GTX 1060 & i5-6600 with 16GB of ram, so I don't think my hardware is the issue, however I still get the crashing
TF2 work fine for me.(max settings, no AA)
Yes, Garry's Mod tends to use a lot more resources than other source games.
I have tried with minimal settings, minimal resolution, without multicore rendering and 8bytes/1MiB/8MiB pulseaudio shm.
Do you have a discrete card or not.
Just answer this questions. Wich type of PC do you have?(Notebook or Desktop) What vendor of Discreete GPU?(AMD or Nvidia) If AMD then open properties of gmod then "Set launch options" and then type this: DRI_PRIME=1 %command% And click OK and start GMOD If Nvidia then do the same but in Launch Options type this: primusrun %command% or optirun -b primus %command%
This would only work if he had a dedicated video card and he hasn't indicated that he does.
Oh, then it would be really god if guy'll post lspci or lshw output. Or just do this: lspci > text.txt and share this file here
I have a discrete GPU (specifically a GTX 1060), and GMOD is crahsing on the lowest settings on Linux.
This is because you're launching it from integrated GPU. To launch it from discrete graphics use solution on my previous post: Gmod on Linux
I'm using a PC, not a laptop so I don't have Optimus. My hdmi cable is in the graphics card
Can you post screenshots of your nvidia-settings ?

Anything else?
Screnshots of all tabs would be realyl helpful

Try this before the GMOD launch: nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUPowerMizerMode=1 Also if this works you can make it permanent How to automatically set PowerMizer to Prefer Maximum Performace..
Still nothing, crashes after "Sending client info ..."
I also get this sometimes: engine error : failed to lock vertex buffer in CmeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer
I crash after initializing game data on arch linux, just gave up a while back, very interested if a fix is found. latest nvidia drivers off AUR and amd cpu
... Anything?
I also had this issue and it was resolved when I lowered the resolution on the game.
Bump? Still getting the same issue, resolution doesn't matter (and I shouldn't have to change that, anyway)
