Gman was seen in opposing force arming a bomb, when gordon was still in black mesa, so when gordon escaped, gman has give the commands to the bomb Set the timer, as everybody knows, in almost end of HL1, Kleiner prepared the Portal to xen with gordon freeman, then Kleiner escaped, when everyone was safe, the bomb exploded, Bringning all the Xen monsters to the world. Gordon is actually still high after his regular morphine injections. The Gman is just some homeless guy in the ER who got wasted.

The GMan doesn't even have a name mentioned in the game that I know of. It's just the name of the model, and it's become the accepted name. If you're going to make a theory about the game's storyline, look in the game, not the models folder. To be honest I don't think even Valve know. I bet they're just taking him places and seeing how it goes as they make a new episode.
