Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife, Sophie, are assassinated in the city of Sarajevo. All around Europe, the powder keg that is militarism is about to explode. With armies mobilizing and the world on the edge of its seat, the world is about to experience the first major, modern war. By September 1914, they create a prototype that is called the 'Stahelm'. German high command almost loves this design, it protects much better against concussions and shrapnel. However, it is much more costly to produce and uses more resources. Germany must face two decisions: Adopt a better, more costly design. Or use the outdated, abundant helmet. General mobilization begins in the wake of instability in Austro-Hungary and the Russian Empire. Millions of men leave their homes and jobs in order to fight for the fatherland. Boys, typically ranging from 10 to 16 years, fill up the factories, fields, and coalmines in order to deal with the demand of mobilization and increased call for military goods. An emergency shipment of 500,000 Gewehr rifles and 1,000 new German officers is sent to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who is facing victory in Serbia, but much of its forces are collapsing against Russia. For the Austro-Hungarians, hopefully this will somewhat turn the tide of battle, or hold of the Russians until the German Army decides to intervene, if ever. - The German High Command begins to redistribute their newly formed armies. Most of which are seeing a massive buildup on the Eastern side of Germany, the rest are building up in Alsace-Lorraine. The French however, aren't taking this quite well. The French government issued an order of mobilization.
Russian Empire Economy - Stagnating Military - Massive, Outdated

- Russian military scientists begin to develop armored cars that are capable of carry heavy artillery, with little success. Most of the time the car breaks down or is extremely slow. They begin to formulate the idea that if it is to carry a heavy gun, it must be built around it. They develop an initial tank called the Tsar Tank. However, it is prone to flipping over and is grossly underpowered. One Russian scientist calls for building it in an armored-tracked vehicle. Conscription in Russia begins in the wake of the successful Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia. Under the guise of mutual aid and ally assistance, the Russian military launches a full scale invasion of the heavily defended border with Austria-Hungary. Millions of Russians rally to defend their Slavic brethren. Hundreds of thousands of men on both sides are killed or maimed for life in the 3 months of action. Eventually, it turns into the favor of the Russians. Their sheer numbers and determination to protect Serbia allows them to gain a foothold and seize most of the border. About 90 Germans were captured during the offensive, of whom all were sent into Russia and nothing has been heard of them since. Currently, the situation on the front with the Austro-Hungarians is bleak. A deadly stalemate has overshadowed the battlefield. With thousands of men fighting back and forth over land. Anti-German sentiment is very high in Russian cities. All over are photos and scarecrows of the Kaiser being stomped on and burnt in the streets. Much of the time though, it turns deadly when the police come to quell the riots. Many of the rioters have mysteriously obtained small arms and are "Swearing to protect the Motherland" with them. - Military funding is increased ten-fold through a 5% increase in taxes across the Empire. Anger against the Tsar is almost as popular as it is against Germans. Cries of unfair treatment and tyranny are heard from afar. The common Russian Citizen is asking them self, "Why are my taxes being increased when I can barely afford food?" The idea of Socialism and Communism, societies where everyone is equal, begin to resignate with the peasantry. Though it doesn't seem like a problem for now. The Russian secret police openly execute Marxists and Socialists. Wherever this happens, the populace begins to become hostile with the police and government. In Moscow most notably, the peasantry burned down a police headquarters when they found out that a popular Left-Wing voice, Vladimir Lenin, had been arrested and shot. An Alliance between the French and English, and Russia, begins to be worked on in Paris. If this happens, the Germans, and Austro-Hungarians will find themselves in a bit of a pickle if a war were to break out against all of them. With, that, trade of common goods and military weapons between the countries opens up, too. Russian soldiers are beginning to be equipped with French and German guns. Talks between the Japanese and Russian government begins for the first time since 1905.

Austro-Hungarian Empire Economy - Growing Slowly Military - Substantial, Outdated

The Austro-Hungarian government, during July of 1914, declared war on the nation of Serbia. Forces attacked in a well organized fashion, taking the poorly-trained Serbians by surprise. The Russian Empire quickly responded by invading Eastern Austria-Hungary in order to honor their treaty with the Serbians. By September 1914, the war is at a stalemate in the Eastern front. - In August of 1914, Austro-Hungarian scientists began researching a poisonous gas that could choke an enemy to death in the battlefield. After weeks of experimentation and some deadly results, they develop a yellow-ish gas, commonly nicknamed Mustard Gas. Now it is up to Austro-Hungarian military officials if they are to use this on either of their two fronts. A small test is conducted on the Russian front. During the night it is launched via mortar into the enemy trenches. The results were horrendous, hundreds of men choking up their innards and suffocating. Mobilization of the Austro-Hungarian Reserves begins and is very desperate. Poorly trained men are given rifles and told to fight for the fatherland against the Russians, while the more experienced forces are dealing with the Serbians. However, by September, 1914, A million men are deemed ready to fight on the front. With another 500,000 being trained to be sent to the front. The problem of poorly trained men on the front though is short lived, German officers and weapons eventually iron out any morale or experience problems. The Austro-Hungarian military begins to use railway artillery. It has little to no effect on the stalemate in the East, only be increasing the death count. Austro-Hungarian industry is given a boost by German investment, and the demands of both fronts create a build-up of military orders. Thousands of youth and impoverished citizens find themselves working in factories or mines. Railways and Steel Mills begin to slowly pop up across the country. - Bulgaria, The Ottoman Empire, and Italy are invited into a mutual alliance by the Austro-Hungarians. All of which honor the request and ally themselves with them. Mobilization of their armies against the Russian Empire and Serbia begins. The Bulgarian army invades Serbia through the south and begins cuts off their supply lines to the fronts with Austria-Hungary.

Japanese Empire Economy - Growing, Industrializing Military - Growing, Modernizing
-
Japanese military scientists begin researching the Type 3 Machine. It is mostly based off older machine gun models, but is a much more modern variant and isn't as prone to malfunction as some European counterparts. Research is on schedule and a prototype should be available by November. The Japanese government begins to forge multiple trade pacts with the Dutch in the East Indies. Foreign products of all types find their way into Japan. Prejudice against Kirishitan, the Burakumin and Ainu is outlawed in Japan. However it's kind of hard to outlaw or prevent prejudice. Perhaps in the next few generations the hate wont be as strong as it now. The Japanese military forms a Korean force called the, "All Korean Legion". Consisting of about 15,000 Koreans, it gives them the opportunity to fight for the Emperor. A new battleship class begins construction. Named the Echigo-Class, it is based off of the Queen Elizabeth-Class. Construction is slated to finish anywhere between 1916 and 1917. School programs meant to improve the literacy of school children are implemented all across the Empire. It is most likely that this will increase the reading and writing skills of the entire nation.

Liberia Economy - Small, Weak Military - Small, nonexistent

- Liberian scientists, with the assistance of the United States, begins to research a battleship similar to the HMS Dreadnought. Though, some corners will be cut in order to save money, as the country isn't known for a strong economy. A law that makes all men between the ages of 16 and 25 sign up for the countries national defense force for two years is implemented. Hundreds dodging the conscription are sentenced with hefty fines or imprisonment if they are caught. A trade agreement for the US is agreed upon by the two nations. 2,000 Springfield rifles, 1,000 M1911 Pistols and 100 Light Machine guns are sent to the Liberian Army. More then requested due to the American surplus.
