I was wondering why is Hydro the only Territorial Control map? I just played it for the first time today and thought it was a really cool map and looked for more, but it was the only one. No custom ones or anything. Is it just harder to make TC maps?
Because apparently people hate TC maps.
It's probably because Hydro usually ends in a stalemate.
Because apparently people hate TC maps.
I wouldn't say hate, as much as annoying, due to the fact that they end in stalemates most of the time.
Hasn't happened to me, personally.
Hard to make, unpopular results. There are custom ones though. I suggest tc_meridian, it's TC but with CTF.
It's not that TC's bad, it's just that it doesn't have it's own niche, like payload and ctf.
Not to mention tc_hydro, the showcase for tc, almost always ends in stalemate and is notorious for it's chokepoints.
I enjoy tc_hydro despite this.
I was wondering the same thing, I hope that the new game mode will bring us something cool though :D
Hydro is one of my favorite maps actually.
I like hydro, many do not, but hydro was the showcase of TC and failed, now everyone is pretty much permanently turned off from it.
I'm not, I would love to see another TC map as long as it doesn't almost always end in stalemates.
apparently it is hard to program or balance,at least that's what wiki says
I like Hydro. But yeah, as has been said, the main reason is because it often stalemates. It's a mode that CAN work very well, but often teams that aren't tightly knit tend to be too disorganized to juggle both attacking and defending.
It's a shame, since I've had some of my most fun moments in this game on Hydro.
Negative reaction from hydro pretty much persuaded valve to stay away from the game mode. But if only they could understand that its the map and not the game mode.
Or maybe because it's difficult to make a balanced tc map.
Or maybe because it's difficult to make a balanced tc map.
Not really. The gamemode itself is very well balanced, it's just the fact that Hydro was made with 2-point pathways and stupid map arrangement that made it so unbalanced.

Actually, no matter what the map layout was you either push or turtle, if either your defensive line or offensive line is broken you'll probably either immediately lose or be forced to hold out until time runs out and it's a stalemate. The problem is with the broken mode itself, having 2 points that capture super fast isn't the best criteria for a mode like TC.
People love Attack/Defend maps for linear objectives. People love 5CP Push maps and PLR for the excitement of the push the entire game. Hydro doesn't have either since you are pretty much either just trying to break a defensive line or holding a defensive line and one point ends the game taking away the whole push feel.
I do like the theme of Hydro though, there should be more Hydro themed maps.

Yea. It's a shame that the art style was so in depth yet people hate the map. Even though Hydro is full of chokepoints, so are other maps like Dustbowl and such, so I don't really think the problem is with Hydro itself but TC as a whole.
Here's something you guys may be interested in. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1384357
I offered a few solutions on how TC could be fixed and I even sent an email to Robin about it.... he never did reply to that email.
I like Hydro. If it was CTF or Payload i would love it.

That's not a bad idea.
Payload Hydro?
I'd play that
I haven't played hydro in ages. Can't say I hate it, sure it could ended in stalemates or one team steamrolled the other but I still want to see it more often.

Hydro took more time to make than all the original maps put together, and it ended up as the most unpopular map on release.
Valve just ... never got over that.

No, he means it's hard to make it balanced, and he's right. Think abut it, you have to make six points and all of them have to be perfectly balanced with each other.
I thought of a good idea for a TC map just now actually. It'd be a fairly linear map, 5 control points, and the middle starts neutral, 2 are BLU, 2 are RED, but the middle point is like KOTH. That'd prevent something like, the team with the fastest Scouts gets the advantage from the get-go. Then it'd play out as sort of a tug-of-war between teams, which would probably result in being more challenging than a 5-CP map, but shorter than a Hydro match.
Not a bad idea BlueFlash...
How about TC but each section has 3 points.
This means that you get the attack and defence mix of the five CP maps but with the randomized mechanic of TC.
I like hydro. I remember I went on one of those stupid LOL 100000 SECONDS ON CLOCK servers and of course, when you're pushed back to your base, you have to defend until time runs out to win that match. Of course, my team was pushed back and the timer was so high it'd take a month for us to defend and win that match.

Holy crap, when did you get back?
On topic: I love Hydro, they really need to make more TC maps.
I've never seen any team actually win Hydro. It's always a stalemate.
Hydro would be interesting if you just removed all the gates, and round ends. and teams would have two ways to access the enemy base.
