• Why do people say the heavy is underpowered?

I don't really see it. Sure, he could use a couple hundred extra HP but I never have problems playing him and routinely do far better than with any other class. He really has the potential, much like scout, to take on any other class confidently.
Everything has a counter for him, everything.
cuz even ze scoot can keel ze hevee nao
Heavy is fat. Thats why.
cuz even ze scoot can keel ze hevee nao
Please leave you're not cool.
Because they tried him first when they first started playing and sucked. After playing a bit with other classes and learning how they play, the Heavy is a monster. To any player that doesn't suck at playing him, he can seriously rip the battlefield up.
Just a few minutes ago I dominated 4 people in 1 life, but yeah he needs somekind of buff
Sure there are many counters to him, but if you are not stupid he can easily be the most powerful class in the game
^^ Pretty much. His non crit DPS is something like 560 per second. You can kill two soldiers every second at close range. Crits is 1070 per second with no damage falloff. Makes up for his mobility for sure.
If valve ever implement the GRU, the heavy will be a fucking one man army.
Who knows. They did say they're doing a second round of class updates. I think they're gonna update the weapons they DIDN'T this time around, though. IE on demoman some grenade launcher sidegrades, shotgun sidegrades for everything else for sure, and maybe different takes on the disguise kit or balisong for the spy. I'm maybe a bit anxious about the engineer update. Heavies don't fare well against sentries, unless they have a medic. [editline]10:13PM[/editline] Also, HWG represents the ONLY mid-range class. Everything else is long range, mid to long range, or short range.
Heavies fare really well against Sentries. A Heavy with full health will out-damage a lone level 3 Sentry at close range. If it's being tanked, he will need a Medic. However, on smaller Dustbowl servers when it's 12 or 16 players, I've found that Heavy is amazing. Switch to Natascha, sit next to a dispenser, never let go of fire. People will be afraid to step out into the open, even Snipers at longer distances. He's great at providing suppressive fire. And when an Uber rolls in they will be forced to deal with you before they reach the Sentry.
Heavy is the most powerful class if you use him wisely. But I believe most don't want to be him whereas he is the slowest. Get a good medic with you. Have him and you check for spies frequently. A little bonus is added if both of you are in good communication via mics.
Heavy's not really "underpowered". He's just got some exploitable weaknesses, i.e; his slower-than-a-slob-in-molasses movement speed and large target size. As long as he watches his own back though, he can still thrive as an offensive and defensive class, and if he's got a Medic and other team mates around(which he usually will) they can help compensate for his weaknesses and make an unstoppable force.
Heavy is the most powerful class if you use him wisely. But I believe most don't want to be him whereas he is the slowest.
Every class is powerful when used wisely. The problem with Heavy is that there is no problem. Every player, when thinking about heavy, sees him with medic behind in open area shooting at everyone with laughter (Meet the Heavy ending). This is wrong, wrong, wrong. He is not offen~ class. He is listed in goddamn DEFENSE. Heavy is perfect when it comes to defending. Spraying bullets with dispenser nearby makes up for sentry. With kritz medic he can kill enemy medic before he pops uber, and so on. Of course it can be used as off~ class, but it works when other team isn't full of competetive clanfags soldiers or good players. I remember how Kikka on FP TF UK 1 server owned enemy team every round with his medic. But if you know that enemy soldiers with medics are on the other side of frontlines, just stay and defend. Even 300 HP is not enough to survive there. tb;dr Heavy should defend because he is listed under "DEF" in class selection menu.
Heavy is supposed to be the tank and if he is on offense you are supposed to form your assaults around him. You're supposed to support him by taking care of Snipers and Spies for him.
The Heavy is similar to the pyro in that he relies on ambushes and getting close to the enemy to gain kills, yet he lacks the mobility and speed to ever get into his effective range without camping and becoming useless. That's why I think the version of the GRU that drains his health will be very useful, letting him swap one attribute (his superior HP) for another (increased speed).
The problem is that while most classes have a chance one on one, Heavy vs pretty much anything else has guaranteed results: He WILL die. When he has team mates hanging around him he's more likely to be useful, but the second he's alone anyone can poke around a corner repeatedly and kill him without receiving a scratch. He also can't escape, leaving him at the mercy of everyone else. He fucking RIPS AND TEARS if you're dumb enough to get near him, though.
I go heavy all the time just to piss off pyros. [editline]01:57AM[/editline] Seriously, the fucking pyros run in swarms right into my minigun.

If you're close enough to him to poke around a corner his minigun will do 30 or 40 dmg per shot respectively, circa Natascha and Sasha.

Was playing 16 person well and FRIGGIN RIPPED AND TEARED as heavy.
I believe the heavy needs a weapon like the soldier's equalizer,
With every class update, they get weapons that make the Heavy harder and harder to play, and other classes just outmatch him, even in his ideal range. It's a sad sad state of affairs. He's not completely useless, and I still love playing him, but if you're against skilled players the other classes will just maul him.
He is really good for surprise attacks, but it's hard for him to get to good places due to his lack of speed and his large stature. He still deals the most damage by a long shot of any class but if you're on the front lines, not only are you being targeted because you're easy to hit, you're also taking up all of the medic's heals which could be used for your teammates. That is why heavy is a defensive class, because on defense you already have access to all the good spots and if you just jump around a corner and rev up your minigun you can deal heaps of damage and they won't see you coming. Plus the minigun and halt rocket jumping soldiers (even if they are ubered) in mid air, sneding them flying backwards.
You guys simply aren't playing him right if you're trying to surprise attack people or be on the front lines. ALL of his counters, except ubers (natascha helps here) are rendered moot by simply playing defensively. FYI, you can play offensively in a defensive way. IE, defend a far-up chokepoint.

[editline]04:20AM[/editline]
A heavy that is good at picking his battles and where to have them is ridiculously powerful; I saw a medic heavy combo camping his enemy's sewer entrance on 2fort, the stairwell down to it, they were literally unstoppable and we had the majority of the team on them, and those two were unsupported by friends. He regularly got 30-50 kill streaks, not even lying. No spies could get them because they were vigilant, they suppressed all the snipers, and any ubers we through at them they countered with their own. I caught onto this and tried it again on a different occasion with my buddy, unsupported as well, we were also unstoppable.
Well, it is 2fort. Not to sound cliché but all the good players spend their time on other game modes/maps.
Your credibility went out the window when you started the map elitism.
Epic Combo.
but it appears that your server lacks good demos. Two (or a lucky one) could have easily decimated them.
