You normally do a minute of silence when someone passes away. However, this isn't the case, since TF2 didn't die. It survived every change, because every change was for good. In about a month or two, we will feel like the micro transactions have always been there, just like every other update.
However, atleast for me, Team Fortress 2 died a little. For me, it used to be that one amazing game, with fantastic free updates. It was almost like it was one of the few games that was able to remain pure in world where 60€ for a game is normal, and where the only way to remain competitive is to keep spending your hard earned money in the newest crap.
Sure, you might say that those pay won't get a competitive advantage, but is that true? Is everything in this game about what works better in a fight? No, it isn't. It's also about equipping the hats you earned and proudly showing them off.
The golden wrench event made thousands of people craft their entire inventories, just for the chance of getting a difrently colored wrench. Did it give any competitive advantage? No, but still everyone wanted one, because the res more in this game than winning a game, there's also winning a game while making the enemy look át. your amazing hat in the killcam.
Team Fortress 2 no longer is the game where how much money you have doesn't impact you ingame. The feeling of escaping reality and entering a world where everyone is equal, is gone.
I'll keep playing Team Fortress 2, and for better or for worse micro transactions will be around. However, it will never be again the same game I used loved.
Let's all make a minute of silence for the old Team Fortress 2, the one that managed to remain pure when all the other games tried to find new ways to milk more money.
