You can trade away those boxes if you don't want to buy any keys.
I think they will be free sooner or later.
Keys aren't free. If you don't want to buy one, you can probably trade the crate to someone in exchange for something nice.

My friend also found one. I think you can actually find them.
In any case you can always trade crates and/or keys for real items to people who actually want to pay to open them.

Some people mysteriously can, actually. I saw one guy earlier in-game put a parasite hat into the trading box.

You can trade it, last I checked. Which was about 3 hours ago. I was scanning over my hats, except my halo, and saw that it wasn't labeled as non-tradable.
I didn't know that crates can give you hats with particle effects
Here's what I did, I traded two hats for paypal money, then used it to buy the key. Essentially I'm just trading for the key, but its a bit more risky.

I also got the Mann Co hat.
That's one way to do it, but I would only risk that with a friend I knew well. What did you get from your crate?
