Most of the time when playing as a defensive engineer (i.e. Intel) when\if using "Гhe Wrangler" i get annoyed by it automatically going in manual control , heres an example , i was chasing a spy or needed more metal , and suddenly a heavy\demo\soldier starts attacking my sentry , obviously i want to get over there and fix it right away without turning on manual , since i want to avoid getting hurt or even killed myself but when im changing from shotgun to wrench , sometimes i might switch to it (the wrangler) by accident or simply because if i browsed too slowly (i use fast weapon switch , because it`s "faster") and no i dont use the weapon slot keys because im rusing towards my sentry and in that panic even might hit the wrong key , plus im controling the engi at the same time.
So the result it that i end up turning on manual without even being close to my sentry , so i cant shoot it at the enemy , nor can i fix it because it shut down for 3 seconds , so it gets blown up and i get killed if i attemt to fix it because it`s not firing at the enemy , leaving me open for an attack.
So is there any way this can be fixed? Does anyone else have this problem?
I simply want it to activate only when i press M1 or M2...
A script of somesort maybe?
Yeah, I agree it should only start taking manual control when you press M1 and not when the draw anim is finished
no i dont use the weapon slot keys because im rusing towards my sentry
bind mouse wheel up to primary and wheel down to secondary. use 3 to switch to meele, or bind it to mouse3 for example. or just use 1 2 and 3 buttons.
Yeah, I agree it should only start taking manual control when you press M1 and not when the draw anim is finished
agree, because if you died using wrangler and your sentry is (luckily) still alive and if you have "remember last weapon" enabled, having wrangler turned on in respawn room will literally turn your sentry off
I just don't plain use the Wrangler. Put your Sentry in a good spot, and hope your teammates are dedicated enough to assist you in keeping it up. Pistol is by far more useful anyway.

That`s a pretty good idea but i play Pyro too and axtinguish alot , it would be kindof akward for me to play like that since im not used to it... i mean , i`ve played this game for about three years... But thanks anyway!

Well i play offensive engineer too , i.e. Gunslinger \ Pistol \ F.Justice , it`s just that sometimes when an uber appears you have no choice but to try and keep your sentry alive , and bashing it with the wrench just doesnt cut it.

I get that most of the time.
I use M3 to automatically switch to melee,no problem here
No scripts exist for what you are asking. Maybe just bind wrangler to F or something for engie, so you don't scroll to the wrong weapon

You can have an engineer-specific config which does this, and have it normal for every other class.
Not entirely sure how to do it, but it's possible. For example, the configs I have have the key which usually calls out "Help" has "Charge Ready" bound instead.
I absolutely hate it when engineers use the wrangler. There are some who use it in the right situation to hit out of range targets but other than that they use it at close range for absolutely no reason.
I hate when there are like 7 on the roof camping
This is one of the reasons why I stay far away from the wrangler. Pistol is for more reliable.
The 1,2 and 3 keys are not too far away from your AWSD keys you know.
If people would get used to using them, they wouldn't need overly complicated scripts.
Wrangled mini-sentries make me rage so much. Especially when defensive engineers are using them.

Yeah I have never had the problem described in the OP or anything similar. I would love to see people that can't use the number keys play HL2DM effectively.
Between Q and the number keys this really shouldn't be an issue. Pull up your melee, then your shotgun and now you don't even need to deal with the mousewheel or slot keys.

This, on the other hand, is annoying and you only reason I have "remember last weapon" disabled. It really should just use the shotgun in this case.
Don't use the wrangler.

At first i didn't really use the wrangler, but now i use it pretty much all the time. As an engineer you should be near your buildings most of the time, because they get destroyed easily otherwise. And when i'm near my SG, i pretty much won't need the pistol at all. It sure does look like a useful option with all the ammo that you can just mindlessly spam around, but IMO the advantages of the wrangler by far outweigh its disadvantages.
- Is a soldier spamming rockets at your sentry? Pull the wrangler out to minimise the damage, and hopefully get a shot back at him, he'll probably change his mind quickly.
- Incoming enemy ubercharge? Switch to the wrangler, and run away if your life is being endangered. If you manage to get a couple of wrench swings on your sentry during their ubercharge, they'll waste pretty much the whole uber on taking your SG down, meaning your team will probably be ready to rape them as soon as the invulnerability wears off, and the damage to your team will be minimal.
- Away from your sentry and it's getting shot at a lot? If you pull the wrangler out the chances of it not getting destroyed become much higher.
+ You can spam rockets around corners.

A wrangled sentry in the right area can defend a vast amount of space all on its own, I find it very useful, more useful than I thought it would be when the item was announced. Wrangler has become a must for me on places like the last part of Hightower when both teams have reached a stalemate or the first part of Badwater for the red team.
If the map doesn't offer good spaces for an efficient Wrangler or I play on offense I gladly switch to Pistol tho, especially because I use the FJustice fairly often.
OT: I agree, a confirming tip of M1 or M2 should establish connection to the sentry. Always annoys me when I, due to my options, get respawned with the Wrangler out before I can switch weapons. That and Dispensers and Teles exploding when switching wrenches (and even Sentries exploding when just switching between SHospitality and normal Wrench) should be fixed by valve.
