Earning money for trading items - Games

Is this possible? A guy on another thread mentioned you could trade hats for real money, and I wonder if that is possible? Maybe it's not the best way of earning money, but it's still something, hehe.

With some more refined metal I can make my first hat. But I need to know wich one I should aim for, so I don't end up with nothing/ non-tradeable for some reason
