Now, I know a lot of people enjoy TF2, but I've never understood why. Recently I tried the game out and here's my thoughts on it:
I had heard there was a store in this game, but I ignored it. Why spend money on virtual items when I could spend it on buying lunch for me and my girlfriend? :-).
So when I started the game, I clicked the "Start playing" button near the top. No problems here, it just told me which game-modes were for beginners and which ones weren't.
I waited for the game to load, and soon I was in the game. After I had picked my class, I introduced myself to the server by saying, "Hey, I'm a new and free-to-play player here, anyone mind giving me some tips?" What I got wasn't tips, but insults such as "Freefag" and "Idiot". I didn't know this games community was so mean...
As I was playing, I noticed alot of people were using different weapons than I was. I assumed it was kind of like MW3 or Battlefield, so I asked, "Hey, can anyone tell me how to access the leveling and loadout menu?"
Again, I was bombarded with insults, but this time they varied from "CONSOLEFAG." to "COD BABY!" I was curious why the server was being so mean, so I decided to try a different server.
Same story on that server, asked how to access the leveling menu, and I was insulted back and forth. So I decided to join another server and keep my mouth shut, and eventually I figured out you find weapons randomly. "That's odd," I thought "it sort of gives an unfair advantage to veteran players...." I kept playing and eventually won a few rounds with my team. At this point I figured I would check out the competitive scene.
I should probably mention at this point that I play MW3 very competitively. I'm honestly very close to being able to make a living off of comp. matches. I'm an officially sponsored MLG player, and I know my way around the MW3 competitive environment. Me and my buddies play on the same team, and I think that we are going to make it big soon, we're already being featured on Machinima and IGN. We can quickly dispatch and take care of any team that tries to challenge us, and we often throw after-parties for our victories.
Anyways, back to the TF2 competitive scene.
After watching a few competitive TF2 videos, I noticed they universally have one thing in common, airshotting and playing Soldier. That isn't a good sign of a comp. side of the game at all, if only one loadout can dominate the rest. I have included three examples of MW3 comp. gameplay, and TF2 comp. gameplay.

Notice how in the MW3 videos a variation of loadouts is used as compared to the one loadout of the soldier.
I don't honestly think I can enjoy this game. It's just too easy to play. I've heard something about hats but I'm sure those are just cosmetic.
I can't recommend this game to anyone, none of my MW3 buddies will enjoy it, and I don't think anyone who can see past it's cartoonish charm will enjoy it either.
4/10
Guys, this is what we call a "gentle" troll.
On topic, to combat one of your things about Soldier being the only thing used in comp... well, I guess you forgot the part where there's also a medic, scouts, heavy, etc.

Also, I rate your trolling 1/10, made me post.

I'm not wanting to come off as a troll, but some of the community here might take it this way, I just wish they had more of an open-mind.
As for your comment about medics scouts and heavies being used in competitive play, I watched many frag videos on youtube, and about 95% of them featured the soldier.
you really did try too hard.
I know this is a troll, but I have to agree that the game doesn't present the drop system to players very well.
It's sort of one of those things you just are suppose to know about, but I remember back when TF2 first went F2P one of the most posted questions was "how do I get more weapons like everyone else."
I would actually have a tutorial on the drop and crafting system, with the reward being Crit-a-Cola or GRU or some other Valve made weapon you can craft for the crafting tutorial, and then have the drop system tutorial give you 3 random weapons and a crate, just to get the new player started. For all old players they could do these tutorials also and just get some free items.
-Snip, I'm a moron.-

No. Go away.
TF2 is not COD, they both play in different ways. In competetive tf2 airshots are common I'd say, but not everyone plays soldier, good medics, scouts and engineers can change the competetive scene very differently. I don't think I've seen a sentry airshot before.
Searched for some frag videos, found NON-SOLDIERS as well.

halo is the best game!!
tf2 is a rip off of halo ofc
There are "frag" videos that don't include soilder.

Also, I'm sure CoD players would be much less merciful if they find out a person's new to CoD.
I know most CoD players who are nice to newbies, me being one of them. Where did you get your facts?

You seem like one of those people who would call me a "freefag". It's a shame the TF2 community isn't open to new players.
I stopped reading when you started comparing TF2 to Modern Warfare 3 and went on a tandem about how it's not competitive enough. I'd give a 5/10 for troll effort though.

Maybe you just don't know what a good competitive game is. Have you ever played Starcraft? That's a great example.
On a side note: I'm tired of 16 year olds calling me f2p because I didn't know about something. I heard someone talking about wrangler jumping and asked about it. Then the guy literally types "*sigh*" and lectures the entire server about f2p ruining tf2 then finally answers me. But by then some other guy told me in two seconds and half the server chimed in saying they never heard of it either.

The only word I'd use for you is "moron" since you obviously had no intent of really playing TF2 by making this thread in the first place.

Glad to see you are open-minded and willing to accept the TF2 community has some major problems.
I don't care if you're trolling or not, but this is not a review.
A review is an objective dissection of a game and its contents, this is a subjectove, heavily biased (Honest maybe but still doesn't mean it's true.) first impressions of the game.

This post confirms my accusations, can you please learn to control your angst and not take it out on me please? I feel that the TF2 community is made up of a bunch of people who are willing to jump on someones behind just because they started playing after them.

Maybe you don't feel the same way I do, and I can respect that, but please don't call me biased just because I don't like a game you do.
Troll somewhere else please and the call of duty community is the same.
Comparing games to other games doesn't count as a review in my book.

I have a masters in Journalism, I'm pretty sure the basis of a review is comparing a games flaws and pros to a mindset. In this case my mindset is MW3.

Just because I haven't posted on here in a while. (Been busy with college.) Doesn't mean I cannot have a valid opinion.
Maybe you don't feel the same way I do, and I can respect that, but please don't call me biased just because I don't like a game you do.
It is biased, biased doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing. However trying to compare this game to your competitive history is being subjective, however you argue.
Actually I really like my crafting/drop system tutorial idea. Start the tutorial by adding a KGB, a Scrap and 2 Valve Medic weapons. Tell the player that they could make a GRU, and that they should try crafting the two Medic weapons together. They get the scrap, then the game prompts them to the right place to look for the GRU recipe and to craft the GRU. If you leave the tutorial at any time, the items leave your backpack, but if you complete the tutorial you can keep the GRU as the reward.
For the drop tutorial it would drop you into the training room and prompt you to wait... 10 seconds later you explode and get 3 Valve made weapons and a crate and are given a brief explanation of the drop system, and the drop cap.
This would allow new users to start off with 4 new weapons and they could then move onto a loadout tutorial that uses the GRU they crafted to equip it to Heavy and play around with it.
Go away.
See now you have just degenerated into 2 word sentences because you cannot counter my argument. I will debate you in private if you are willing to put up a valid and complete argument. Thank you.

You know how you probably dislike people who call MW3 cockadooty and stuff? You've basically come in here and said that sort of stuff about TF2.
*slow clap*
