Keep in mind, this interview is about l4d, and if you listened to the audio recording, he said it sarcastically, which means we "might" see an end to this.
I really mostly followed the Steam forums thread, sans the mention of that is sarcastic. I just didn't want someone else to post this with out including that information, which would of created a massive spiral of rage.

I don't think Valve is evil, honestly, even though that's what my last 2 avatars implied.
Valve makes a valid point, running a idle program to get hats and weapons is cheap, but we were never told that they did not like it and did not get a warning, or they did not tell us sooner, therefore both valve and the community have their faults.

1: You don't get warned before you're VAC banned either.
2: The Idler goes against the EULA. It always did. You [b]agreed[/b] to it when you installed steam. If you had actually read it, you would have KNOWN the idler was against the rules.
3: Valve stated several times that they did not like idlers. (I'm kind of pulling this out of context. Valve was asked if idle [b]servers[/b] were okay. Their reply was that they had no way of preventing them, so they weren't going to do anything about them. They also said "[b]That doesn't mean we like them.[/b]" That's warning enough.)

1: Yeah well if you are using an external program you should know that you're going to get in trouble, it's common sense. I mean, they already did it once with the Achievement Unlocker.
2: Because you don't warn somebody that you're going to be punished. Does a cop warn a drug dealer before they burst into their house and arrest them, after spending months gathering evidence?

You have a valid point, we broke the rules, but don't you think they should have done it earlier? You know, before everybody got hats from it? I know updates take some time to make and detecting a game emulating program can be a problem, but valve is smart when it comes to these things and usually they don't act this slow.
whatever, the only thing I lost was a 1 hat that for a class that I didn't even use.

also Chet was a nice guy, I met him about a year ago. I didn't hear the voice clip so I'm not sure quite how he meant it but if he was being serious it's a real shame.

I never heard that. Some random emails shown by random people on random forums don't really qualify as warnings.
It would've taken them 10 minutes to make a blog post. Plus, the whole point of warning is that you warn people, not punish anyone who had used it in the last 3 months.
I lost a Sniper hat and a Dead Ringer to this. I honestly couldn't give two shits. The only thing about this whole mess that worries me is people being banned for having/not having a halo.
