• Punishments - Account Disablement

Recently numerous people, including myself, have had their accounts disabled for scamming a few hats off of some unsuspecting players. What's Facepunch's opinion on the punishment? Too harsh, or just right?
Just right. It's a privalage to be able to trade. Don't take advantage of it.
Serves you right.
What counts as scamming, making a really good trade or going "Hey man I'm gonna paint your hat for free"?
Far too harsh. Return the hats, then repeat offense ban that player from trading.

snipped
If it teaches a lesson it's done its job.
How do they detect it?
Account disablement for abusing idiocy is bullshit when you merely get VAC banned from hacking.
How do they detect it?
People report them.
Its just Valve catering to the SPUF (arguably the worst TF2 community to date) once again.
It's a bit harsh to lose your entire account, but you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
Harsh Very very harsh I'd rather be banned from TF2 CS:S L4D L4D2 etc. etc. online games than have a £120 account disabled COMPLETELY, heck, the account disabling is the only reason I didn't scam in the first place
Mine was worth about five hundred or four hundred dollars, some people have about a thousand put into theirs.
To be honest, in my opinion, every player should look out for this, and it's not valves responsibility to ban accounts when people report "I gave them my crate and they didn't give it back!", or "They told me to push the big button that said TRADE NOW, and I did, so ban them!"
They didn't give you any warning, and once Valve did give a warning (to Facepunch, not all of Steam) they applied lighter punishments. The exact opposite of a deterance, just Valve being an asshole.
Mine was worth about five hundred or four hundred dollars, some people have about a thousand put into theirs.
You seem to be taking this calmly. In my opinion, Account Disablement is WAY to harsh. And we're even talking about Valve here. There are people who could scam someone out of 17 dollars, at most, but what if there's one who scammed someone out of a in-game item obtained via a drop? Does it justify closing an account of a buyer who spent hundreds of dollars? That's worse than Microsoft's Xbox Live policy. Valve should rethink this. Each day of this whole charade makes me think that the only reason we loved Valve so much is that it held back with what the other companies were doing. It seems like because of the in-game store they're shifting from "fan support" to "consumer support".
This is valve kicking us while we are down, I paid at least $100 dollars on items in the shop, and I get "Herp you scammed an item, i'll keep your money if you don't mind."
It's way too harsh, you shouldn't get your account disabled, at minimum you should lose trading though.
You seem to be taking this calmly.
No use crying over spilled milk, just was wondering what everyone else thought.
Way too harsh. A VAC ban at most.
it's not harsh at all
I hope they revert the disabled status of scammer's accounts and just ban them from trading, once they got their "looking for less harsh punishment alternatives" of them sorted out. Right now it's too harsh, even when you shouldn't be scamming people in the first place.
heck, the account disabling is the only reason I didn't scam in the first place
The system works!
Wait, they disabled your entire Steam account? In my opinion, that's crazy. They should have taken away all of your TF2 items and locked you out of trading. But not disabled your entire Steam account.
Wait, they disabled your entire Steam account?
Yes, and many others.
Way to harsh.
Personally, if I were in your spot, I would've raged so badly that fire would've come out of my asshole.
