WTF is the medals? I haven't played TF2 for a while now but i've never seen medals before, how do you get them and what do they do?
Things which show who have social lives and regular sleep patterns, those who have one have neither.

After the classless update, all you had to do was visit a page on the valve site and receive 1 of 11,111 medals for the soldier.

But to add to that, the Gentle Manne's Service Medal is just an unlock for the Soldier that was exclusively given to 11,111 players who had clicked a hidden link in the Classless Update page on the official TF2 blog. Those players were sent the medals which can be equipped in the "Misc" section of the loadout.
So there's no real way to get one at this point unless in the near future you find someone who would be willing to trade you for it, once that system is implemented of course. Although, I have heard that medals which are deleted eventually re-surface into the random drop system. I don't know if there's any truth to this though.
And like the hats, it has no real function and it's purely cosmetic.

And Australia. We all got up at 6, played a bit, messed around on facepunch/steam forums, heard something about 'soldiers medal' checked out the pge, mised it by 30 minutes.

Damn thats a bad deal, the medal is extremely rare compared to a hat. Ask for more, you know it makes sense.
I would trade a medal for a hat (or 2) definetly.
Because its hardly see-able.
That's assuming medals (and halos) are tradeable
