Valve was at the Game Developers Conference yesterday talking about TF2 being F2P, here is the summary Choice Quotes
In June of 2011, Valve Software took its four-year-old online first-person shooter Team Fortress 2 and made it completely free-to-play -- and ended up increasing revenues by a factor of twelve as a result.

Each content update started with a teaser trailer that hinted at several possible new items or features, and Valve developers would monitor the community reaction in the forums to determine which aspects caught the players' attention. "We found people in the forums talking about how cool it would be if the Pyro could light the sniper's arrows on fire. To be honest, we hadn't considered it, but we were able to implement it by the time the update shipped," Ludwig said.

In another instance, players picked up on a blueprint displayed in passing within the teaser trailer for the Engineer-focused update of a mechanical hand item. Ludwig explained that "[The players] didn't realize it, but they were indirectly voting on the content of the update. When the update shipped, it included that robot hand."
and in blunt honesty
Pretty much every place you give the community a chance to change the game, they'll do it, and they'll probably do a better job than you would
So if people liked the blowtorch or hammer more. we woulda got those?
So if people liked the blowtorch or hammer more. we woulda got those?
it seems that way We were voting and we didn't even know it. Since they had the assets made already, they should go and add the other items now...
Neat. So if we keep suggesting good ideas, Valve'll make 'em?
Neat. So if we keep suggesting good ideas, Valve'll make 'em?
The problem is: What's good and what's not?
I'd love to know what a blowtorch would've done in game.
sounds like more hints towards ROBOT HEADS
Valve puts items in games we don't actually vote on, but when we get a big unique workshop system the most wanted items don't get in. Nice
[release] We also made a distinction between paid and free accounts; smaller backpack sizes, and fewer crates.[/release] Wait, whaaaa? They get less crates than us or what?
I'd love to know what a blowtorch would've done in game.
Flamethrower Lite
Constant damage/repair instead of spike.
I think the "if there are good and liked stat ideas, we will use them" part is why one (or was it two?) weapons from the Advanced Weaponiser made it into the game.
I think the "if there are good and liked stat ideas, we will use them" part is why one (or was it two?) weapons from the Advanced Weaponiser made it into the game.
Don't forget the Equalizer and Sandman which both were suggestions on SPUF.
the Wrap Assassin was also straight from the contributor.

Ludwig explained that "[The players] didn't realize it, but they were indirectly voting on the content of the update. All we need to do is break off into equal groups and respond fanatically towards every single tiny detail everywhere to ensure that they'll have to add all of it into the game. Oh, wait. We already do that.
[release] We also made a distinction between paid and free accounts; smaller backpack sizes, and fewer crates.[/release] Wait, whaaaa? They get less crates than us or what?
Free accounts get MORE
[release] We also made a distinction between paid and free accounts; smaller backpack sizes, and fewer crates.[/release] Wait, whaaaa? They get less crates than us or what?
also f2p get better drops.
they should add the other options to the workshop or just in beta or straight in game
Cool, still curious why the Enforcer's such a gigantic steamer, though.
Blowtorch? Sounds like Battlefield. (When I saw blowtorch, I imagined following a spy and firing him up like in battlefield...)
Wait, if I hadn't thought the robot hand was cool, we would have got something that wasn't the Mini-Sentry? Can we go back in time and change things? Those things seriously annoy the hell out of me.
Wait, if I hadn't thought the robot hand was cool, we would have got something that wasn't the Mini-Sentry? Can we go back in time and change things? Those things seriously annoy the hell out of me.
They are fine.
Wait, that's bs. IIRC people were all like "Oh cool, Blowtorch, new engy item!"
[release] We also made a distinction between paid and free accounts; smaller backpack sizes, and fewer crates.[/release] Wait, whaaaa? They get less crates than us or what?
Shit can I be f2p
[release] We also made a distinction between paid and free accounts; smaller backpack sizes, and fewer crates.[/release] Wait, whaaaa? They get less crates than us or what?
Oh man. I'm so going to bury F2P folk from Valve servers in crates.
Wait, that's bs. IIRC people were all like "Oh cool, Blowtorch, new engy item!"
I remember it as hype around the hammer
Either one would have been cool, but we honestly got the coolest one of the three.
When they talk about the engineer's glove and and the Gunslinger, are they referencing to sound that was made by the sentry when the engy reached for his beer?
they're talking about the engineer update teaser, not Meet the Engineer
campaign mode or someting similar...MAKE IT HAPPEND
I think the "if there are good and liked stat ideas, we will use them" part is why one (or was it two?) weapons from the Advanced Weaponiser made it into the game.
That reminds me of the YER, everyone was talking about how cool it would be if the knife was a silent killer and gave you instant disguise when the polycount winners were revealed
