...Well, this is bad! Since i bought TF2, I've had the worst lag ever!
I have 4 gigs of RAM, and Directx 9.0.
I've heard that if you switch to Directx 8 then that gets rid of the lag, and i tried it but the problem is that my comp cant handle DX 8 so my game just crashes and I'm forced to use DX9! I'm really hoping someone has had this problem and was able to resolve it. I REALLY wanna play TF2 and kick some ass, so, PLEASE help me!
Define lag.

like REALLY bad FPS. It will take my about 25 seconds to run 10 feet
run in -dxlevel 80 or upgrade your graphics card

You can try a fps config.
Just for future reference, because some people get mad about this:
You're talking about graphics issues, not lag. Lag is a network issue. It's based on how high your ping is.
I really hope I'm right otherwise I'm gonna sound like the biggest dick

Better if he upgraded his CPU first.
How does DX8 crash your computer when DX9 doesn't.
It puts less stress on your card right?

I've had pretty crappy performance as well, and have applied both of those fixes, nothing's helped. Though in my case I also experience frequent display-driver crashes, but only in TF2. I don't recall ever crashing in HL2 or L4D2...
Oh, and TF2 runs on my system at about 30-40FPS in heavy combat, often dipping lower than that depending on the map. That should not happen with a dual-core CPU and a GTX285.

Athlon FX-62 dual-core 64-bit CPU @2.8GHz
2GB DDR667
eVGA nVidia GTX285
Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe
Settings are on medium-ish (I still keep texture quality high)

Tried it, no noticable effects.
