• Newer players get hats more often?

I'm sure I brought this up before (not many people understood what I meant but the majority did) about newer players on TF2 being able to have more hat drops/luck than those with older accounts. Short thread, sadly, but is this a common misconception? I'm thinking that there's a formula for newer players, possibly to get friends to buy the game so they can have a bunch of hats and older players will be wanting those hats. I think 'luck' is not a valid reason in this case. It's not just luck, and nothing in existence is random. Happens for a reason v:v:v So how come more newer players will get things more often than others? Quick addition: Over the course of the time of the first hats to now, I've had maybe only 2 hat drops and the rest were traded or crafted. The newer players can probably rack up about 3 to 5 hats in less than a year.
Coincidence.
They don't.
Yes they do, and I have proven this by the alts a friend and me have got.
I've been on steam a few days after it was released, and I've had TF2 since Christmas 07, and I've got barely any hats found over that period up to now. A player who joined at the start of the year will probably have about twice as many hats, if not the same, just receiving them faster.

I've gotten 3 hat drops, and LOTS of weapon drops. It's a coincidence. And don't tell me 2 years is new.
I've had tf2 since release, barely played and have had 2 hat drops. Probably valves way of giving hats to casual players?
I am a casual player. 1290 hours of total play would say that I play daily
A friend and me had created about 4 alts, for each account, each got a hat, AND EVEN TWO in the first week of drops. I don't call it a coincidence, I call it bullshit.
Wouldn't be surprised.
Brb, creating a new account and buying the game
On my first account, I've received 1 hat drop over my 2 years of playing this game. I made an alt account to buy the Orange Box, ofc I got TF2 with it. My alt got the Towering Pillar after 23 hours of playing. Fucking 23. I've only had one hat drop in my 500+ hours plus, and it was at around 150 hours.
Of course Valve's gonna hand out hats and items pretty quickly to new players, that's called hooking the players (and it's also one more lie to add to the "the system is pure random" claim)
I received a random hat drop yesterday. I've only played TF2 for 3 days, 72 hours in total. My brother has played it for about 400 hours and received 1 hat drop. Why is has it only been 3 days and I get a drop? [sp]Not complaining[/sp]
This might be true. I've got 500+ hours, played since beta, and I've received one hat drop.
Yeah this is really weird.
I should have made the title "Newer players get items/hats more often?"
My Steam account is from 2004, TF2 from December 08. I have 11 hats (not including promo/other hats), most of them found.
I think because Valve wants to give new people a more fair chance at getting hats because the guys who played it longer have more hats. At least, that's what it looks like.
I have the silver medal and I only have like four or five hats (excluding those that are from preordering or buying or owning other games, or the Halloween event)
I am a casual player. 1290 hours of total play would say that I play daily
1290 hours is hardly casual, I have 240 hours after owning TF2 for three years.
I've had TF2 for over two years now. I've had 6 hat drops.
I've played 340 hours and haven't had any hat drops yet. My first (and only) hat craft was a mining light damn.
I've played since around the Gold Rush Update(Since release on the 360) and I've gotten 3 Hat drops.
So thats why I get 1 hat drop every 2/3 months? I play since april, since that I've found 3 hats
I think if you have a significant amount of time NOT played recently, you have a higher chance of getting a hat drop. Before Mann CO., I stopped playing for about a month and a half, and the next 2 drop weeks supplied me with a Whiskered Gentleman and a Batter's Helm.
I got TF2 in Nov 07 and I have 735 play time of TF2, only 3 hat drops.
So 100 hours = 1 hat?
So why have I not got 12 non-event hats
I've found 4 hats, bought this game last summer.
i suffered massive irony yesterday.... i posted on a thread similar to this one "i have NEVER found a hat in tf2... then i went on a server, 20 -30 mins later i found my first EVER hat it was hatless engie, crafted it with the yellow belt got hotrod then traded that for ye old baker boy ^^ i think its just all completely random mate. [editline]17th October 2010[/editline] worked out better IMO.
