I got a hat without being in the game (No programs used)

NOTHING like a third party program used. So don't start.
My friend (BlackWind) looked on my TF2Items page (for some reason I do not know of) and alerted me I had a new hat. I told him I already had the pointy Precussion helmet, but he said I had a new one.
When he told me that I hadn't been on the damn game in 4 days.
4. Damn. Days.
I thought he was lying until he gave me the link to my page. He was right, but I still suspected him.
I joined our server, and after shooting random shit, I killed myself, and :woop: the hat unlock item screen appeared (the one where it asks you to remove/equip/other).
Now I wonder how I earned that. It seems I idled without actually doing anything about the game. Now I know it's possible to get a last second message about getting the hat before you leave a game/TF2, but I doubt that's happened.
(If anyone of you are interested, my TF2Items page is; http://www.tf2items.com/profiles/76561197960767503)
So anyone want to tell me how I got a hat without even being in TF2 for at least 4 days (as to what something told me I wasn't in for 4 days)
Apparently the first poster says I'm a lucky bastard for getting the hatless sniper. I am :smug:
lucky bastard
Boomer, I am also bewildered. And a lucky bastard. :buddy:

I'm also a cheater.
(Apparently)
You would've got it if you died once more the last time you played.
Yeah, but it came up saying I found it as well. (The yellow writing)
The yellow writing comes up after you get the popup message, as long as you don't discard it. I think.
To be honest, I don't really like the hatless 'hats'
but anywho, good for you seeing as you like it.
I think Valve made it possible to earn items when only being on Steam. I'll go check.
Your dad wanted to know what's the deal with that game, so he gave it a spin at 4am.

He already owns the game.
(And sucks hard)

This. You probably found it during your last session (and didn't notice the yellow writing), yet you left before it popped on your screen.
Mystery solved.
No I look at alot of the writing and anything I notice yellow (you have no idea how good I am looking at the corner of my eye :3:) I look straight away.
I had console up when I pressed "Quit Game", just to let you know.
I kinda feel sorry for you, I had the hatless sniper, and it sucks, nobody ever notices it, so what's the point?

no one notices any hat in the heat of the battle.
and if they do, what are they gonna do?
"oh nice he has a hat"
no one is going to go
"OMG U HAS HAT I SUK UR DICK"
Last time I went on the FP server every single demoman was wearing the top hat.
What the fuck?

But I don't get how I got a "hat" whilst not being in-game.
As I tried to say before, you got the hat the last time you played, but you didn't die after you "unlocked" it, so it showed on tf2items.com, most likely down the bottom because it wasn't in a slot yet, and you got it when you died next.
I have Tyrolean that I achieved in-game.
You have a hatless Sniper.
No one will be able to see the difference after your face gets shot in and your slouch hat goes flying 40 feet away.

Anyways.
Bald engineer is best engineer.
Also, this seems like the time I got a Picklehaube that just showed up in my inventory, no dialogue box or confirmation or anything. Just "Here ya go, enjoy." or something. Not that I'm complaining, but why would a hat just magically appear without warning? I got my Demofro the next day. Atleast I was prompted on that. Regardless, I've no idea what caused it. Maybe I just overlooked the confirm screen with "Okay resume game." button, but it didn't show the lettering in-game, so....yeah.

This. Happened to me before. I got off the game before I died. When I got back on TF2 and into a server, it immediately popped up notifying that I've received a new weapon.
I are the discorvererer :eng101:

Wow. You shall be heralded as the greatest discorvererer in the history of mankind.
I haven't been on Tf2 in weeks, join game, die, Texas Ten Gallon!
Since you are a communist, someone with more hats than you gave you one, out of communism.
Something similar happened to me except I got 2 dupes.
Feedback must be right! :ninja:
This conveniently happened after I emailed gabe.
I thought I'd leave "can has hat :(?" in there for shits. It turned out 2 days later that I actually recieved a hat, or more hatless hat.

It's more noticeable than the Trophy Belt.
I remember back when it was cool to have Hatless Sniper... back when I still had hats.

What was Valve thinking when they introduced the Trophy Belt?
