What if they made the medals based on how long you've been playing, rather than when you started playing?
For example: play three months and get a bronze medal, play for a year and get a silver, then play for two years and get a gold.
As you pass these benchmarks, you get the better medals. This will let new players get medals over time and will reward faithful players.
EDIT:
I didn't mean in-game time. Basically, after you have owned the game for a specific amount of time, you get the new medals. For example, I now have the silver medal. After a few more months, on my 2-year anniversary so to speak, I'd get the gold medal.
This would fill achievement_idle servers.
Idling.
Edit:
Damnit Emra.
Only if the medal said "I idled for 570 hours and all I got was this stupid medal"
If you have a total playtime of 2 years...
It would make much more sense to have the medals reflect how long you have owned the game, rather than when you first purchased it.
Beta medals would remain unique.
Not in-game time. It would be from the time you joined.

^That is literally exactly what I meant. Thank you.
^ Isn't that what they do now?
This thread is confusing.
Anyway, if they were going by the console versions I'm technically a grizzled veteran. I got the console version before I got a decent gaming PC. Don't even ask how crappy my old computer was, but it couldn't even play TF2.
I'm not upset that I don't have Grizzled Vet though. Who freaking cares? As soon as they make cool misc stuff for all the classes I'll probably not even wear the medals anymore.
Exactly. I would much rather wear my Medic Mask than some shiny silver medal most people have.
And no one really takes notice of the medals in game anyways. Same with even the Soldier medal. It's sad but true...

I'm pretty sure you own the game when you buy it.
But when the game gets older everyone would have the best medals.
Wait, wait.
I get it now.
This has been suggested before.

Great automerging there.

They are quite noticeable, All the snipers I see are wearing a shiny silver medal and have great big holes in their heads.
Really counter-productive.
I kill snipers whether they have a medal or not.
It has no effect on my aim nor theirs.

Its just that they stand out more in the shadows. therefore making it easier.
Also valve has to fix the amount of aim-bobbing players get when repeatedly shot.

There's nothing wrong with that. Mind you, it would take years for some people to move up the ranks.

Pretty much. The other day some guys that I've played with for about half a year just now went "Oh you have a service medal?"

Valve should really make it easier to see the Service Medal. Perhaps a golden glowing particle effect similar to the halo on it?
Perhaps not.
