It was ment to get people together to trade stuff when the trading system came out, but it's useless now.
Wouldn't a lot of the items for trading be gone now since a lot of the hats people got by idling?

It only wants your Steam ID so people can find your account to contact you. It doesn't ask for your Steam account's password.

Read the FAQ, it recommends using a password that is not your steam password.
