I've started playing TF2 again because of all the new hats and achievements, etc. Well like the title says...my TF2 likes to crash at random times. I am able to play for varying times, but it always seems to crash with the error 'hl2.exe has stopped running'. Recently I just got my GTX 280 RMA'd, and I do not believe that's the issue. Other games work fine such as 5 straight hours of L4D2.
Some things I tried to fix the issue:
1. delete and re-install TF2 (tried three times already, including manually deleting the files)
2. reinstall/get latest drivers
3. disabling some background applications
4. disabling MOTD
5. disabling multicore rendering
6. Delete the 'tf' folder in HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Valve > Source
Some things I have yet to try (but doubt could be a solution):
1. lower quality settings (haha yeah right xD)(It seems to increase my play time before crashing though)
2. reinstall Steam
3. not play at all
4. <Insert your solution here>

Ok, well I created a thread on the Steam forums as well and this is what they said:

All I know is Re-Install steam otherwise its either a conflicting software or a hardware issue.

How come it only happens in TF2, and not L4D2? They both use hl2.exe to run. Also, how would I go about figuring out if it's a 'conflicting software or a hardware issue'?
1) Windows + R, type regedit
2) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wow64Node (I believe it's for some x64 systems, otherwise skip to the next folder) > Valve > Source
3) delete the "tf" folder

What's in that folder? I want to know if I'm deleting something important.
Listen to Max, he's a smart kid. I think he knows what's good or bad.

Video settings.
Ok, I deleted it, and it seemed to be working (about an hour of playtime which is longer than usual), but then it crashed when I have to reconnect to a server.
