• How did valve detect the idlers? (as in, sourceop's idler)

Did they see who connected to his server? How did they do it? Only asking because if its just the server, can't we just get the source code and make it host the server locally, or use an achievement_idle server?
Found the server's IP, took the items of anyone who ever connected to it.
Found the server's IP, took the items of anyone who ever connected to it.
then what is preventing us from remaking the idler?
then what is preventing us from remaking the idler?
The same thing happening...?
The same thing happening...?
they cant prove if the server is for the idling program or not if each person is hosting their own server.
they cant prove if the server is for the idling program or not if each person is hosting their own server.
Do you get how hard it is to make a fake server program?
considering how the sourceop idle servers had over 1000 people in it at a time...could be easy to find
Do you get how hard it is to make a fake server program?
I doubt it's too hard to imitate a listen server. And either way, you could just do what Dispenser GUM is doing, and have it connect to other idling servers that are only 32 players and look like normal servers.

Seeing people who had been playing for hours but having no points.
Or you could just play the game.
Don't be stupid, people who idle aren't doing it instead of playing the game, they do it while they can't.

they planned it for weeks, which is what people were so angry about, instead of just saying, don't idle, or we'll take your items, they asid idling with the idler is fine, all the while they were planning to remove every item obtained by the idler, probably implementing added code so items can be tracked and such.
Weeks, really? I never considered that part. Even without it, it's dumb.
I seem to recall someone discovering code in the gcf for the halo about 3 days before it actually happened It's not like it was a spontaneous thing, everyone knew about the "level 100 cheatdetector" in the gcf
The necessary client files were uploaded 3 days before the event, however, it doesn't mean they havent been working on it long long before. I mean, they had to create the update that occured 3 days before the event [which means at least 1 or 2 weeks]. And they had to create a script that would use the item drop logs and remove all items acquired on specific server IPs. And then create a script that would give a halo to everyone who didnt have said server IPs in their logs. They could probably do the same thing to in-game idling if they wanted, by identifying IPs of servers that are permanently for idling.... but they won't, since the official TF2 client is used to connect to those legitimate servers. What we chose to "do" inside those servers is our own business. ... which wasn't the case with Steamstats.
I still chuckle when I think back on the idler cull.
I still cry when I think back on the idler cull. :v:
I doubt that.
I work all day, 6 days a week. At night, I'm lucky to have an hour or two at most to play my games or watch tv shows etc. About a week before Valve turned gay, I started using the idle app because it was a good way for me to increase my chances (by increase I mean equal them to that of 'normal' players) of getting a hat. So while I sat at work all day, I let that idle app go on a spare PC here. Never got anything, but I also didn't get anything removed, nor did I get branded a dirty stinking child-raping idler either. My point being - doubt it all you like, a metric fuckton of people who used that idler used it for 'realistic' intents.

They have a man on the inside. Poor guy.

OH NOES IT'S A VALVE EMPLOYEE REMINDING US HOW WE LOST ALL OUR HATS BY NOT AGREEING WITH THE ITEM SYSTEM(this is a joke)
Really? Are you still rattling about idling?...
Fuck, we all got burned once and had our hats taken from us why do you have to keep sticking your dick in the fire? You'll just lose your hats again and bawwww all over the forums. The smart idlers stopped idling (and decided to play the game, remember the hat-rate increased) or at least do it on the achievement_idle servers.
smart idlers... or at least do it on the achievement_idle servers.
Exactly, there's no reason to try to recreate Steamstats on a private server. If you find in-game idling inconvenient, just use my batch script. Using any dummy/fake TF2 client used to idle is asking for trouble. Sure, you might not get caught, because they'd have to be aware of what you're doing... but who knows if they put some added detection to see if you're running the real TF2 client or not.
