tl;dr
Does a GTX 670 have the same "driver has stopped responding and has recovered error crash" as a 285?
I play games in a 1920 X 1200 Resolution
So my current setup is 2 Nvidia GTX 285's water cooled in SLI. The CPU is included in the same water cooled system loop as the 285's.
I suffer from the "driver has stopped responding and successfully recovered" error.
Now awhile back there was an update that borderline fixed this. The driver would still crash but when it "recovered" TF2 would reload all its resources and would recover from it's black screen (no need to restart TF2)
However this has been broken again and when the driver crashes and "recovers" I don't get any video, just sound. I can hear whats going on but I can't see anything.
The only way for me to fix this is to press ~ and type Quit in console and relaunch, only to have it happen again anywhere form 15 minutes, or on the other hand it could be fine for the rest of the day.
"Extremely unpredictable."
It also happens in Fallout New Vegas
So I downgraded to DX 8.1 because it doesn't happen at much, and for a while I was using Chris max frames fps config. However now that DX 8.1 crashes the game more than in DX 9 I switched back to 9
I have did my research and I think that I am going for the GTX 670.
I want a card that will last me at least as long as my 285's have (I have used these cards for almost 4 years.)
There great cards, I purchased them in 2009 and I planned I would continue to use them until about 2014 but the crashing has become unbearable
Since my current setup isn't designed for air cooling my only choice is to get them water cooled.
So I'm thinking about getting 2 670's ((water cooled)) and put them in SLI the only thing stopping me is if these have the same driver problem as the 285.
If they don't, then I think that is what I'm going to get, unless someone recommends a better card for price/future proof.

I'm leaning towards the evga one normal 2gb NOT the TFW edition just normal Since I can't seem to find just plain Nvidia brand
2 of them in SLI and water cooled

Oh, and I like your username.
Ha ha thanks. I forgot my username and password (I just let chrome remember that stuff but I'm on a hotel computer) So I just made a quick account.
Copy and pasted thread here.

However, if anyone here knows, I'll be checking both threads.
I run tf2 in 1920x1080 with the nobordered fullscreen launch options and I have an MSI 670 Power Edition. I can run tf2 flawlessly.

about how many hours of tf2 have you logged on that card?
And no driver crashes?
I would also prefer to use just plain nvidia brand. I don't want to overclock. Factory overclocked or otherwise.
If you want a graphic card just to play TF2, you wont need to spend your money on a MSI 670. Just buy a GTX 560 Ti, or even a cheaper one if you want. I use it and it's great. I play with maxed out settings with a 1920x1080 resolution.
Also, the driver crashes that you are experiencing might be possible to fix. It might not be a problem with the GPU.
Yes my main game is Currently TF2 but I also play fallout New Vegas and several mid-high demand games.
I relize that one of the cards you sugested would be fine for this also.
The main thing I am concerned about is if the cards will last about 4 years.
My 285's are great and give me great performance I'm sure I could play some games in the future on mid to mid high settings in the future.
Such as Bioshock infinite when it comes out. (I want to run that game at max everything)
I want to play games at my native res and high-ultra quality for about the next 4 years.
I think that 2 evga 2GB GTX 670 2GB NOT the TFW edition just normal edition, watercooled would be excellent.
Also, The problem is a known issue with the 200 series cards. but there have been some reports that the issue is on some of the high series cards such as the 400 and 500 series.
It "supposedly" happens when a sudden leap in action happens in the game and the GPU can't scale itself fast enough to keep up.
However Runing the GPU at max all the time still causes it. So I'm calling BS on that reason.
What temps are the 285's actually reaching?

High 60's usually around 68c sometimes get in the low 70s from what I have tested
I ran furmark on them a while back for about 20 minutes and they got to about 82c

I've experienced no crashes, lag or anything like that. Probably played about 100 hours on my new card. Before I had a 9800GT which would crash sometimes. But I'm feeling really good about my new card with TF2. Would highly recommend it.

If you don't mind, Do you happen to know whats different with this model over the evga one?
This is my first time picking out a card. I got my machine prebuild.

Also.. Does anyone know where to buy cards that already have water blocks on them?

the difference between manufacturer's graphics card usually isn't massive. It's just a couple of things which are changed, such as memory and cooling. I noticed you said you didn't want to overclock, so watercooling is definitely not needed. But I can't really help you with watercooling with your graphics card. I've only done my CPU with an integrated watercooling.
I'd recommend asking on reddit's buildapc or some other hardware related forum, overclockers is great.

Now I can get these cards now and choose to water cool them later correct?
I have heard that the fan on the card is enough to keep them cool.
