I run a server that provides almost everything a decent TF2 player will want; a decent map list, no crits, no damage spread, non-restrictive class limits and all-talk for those social occasions.
And yet, it almost never receives traffic unless I'm actively inviting people to it. I was aware that the general TF2 public enjoyed 2fort instapsawn 32 players useless mods yadda yadda, but I had no idea it was this bad.
I advertise my server's features in the title, created a group and have a growing list of members, and yet the server never fills itself.
What can I do that would at least have people find and join my server on their own accord, as opposed to just giving in to shitty GameArena or Internode servers?
I do try, and I do that most days. I rarely have any issues when I can get a bunch of my friends in there, though I am stuck waiting for a long time to get a decent game going.
But the problem is the server almost never gets started on its own.
where is the server located?
have you taken time zones into effect?
I'm Australian and obviously I'm not going to complain when no one joins at 4:30am.
Even at peak hours my server is often left dead.
I'm not a 32 man 2fort instaspawn server person, but I avoid any server with
no crits, no damage spread, class limits and all-talk
The average player wants the middle ground. A map rotation, with default settings. Nothing more, nothing less.
It has a decent map rotation.
Anyway, like I said, I'm not aiming for the average player who likes 2fort and whatever else, my target audience is amongst those who enjoy a somewhat serious game with a degree of skill.
Go play on a 24/7 2fort server and then go play on a 'CP maps only' server with crits disabled, and tell me you can't notice a different in the average skill levels and maturity of the players on them. That was my initial inspiration.
Stripped down TF2 that runs more maps than most servers
Is more social than most servers
Where people can enjoy a serious game
Yeah pretty much
I run a server that provides almost everything a decent TF2 player will want; a decent map list, no crits, no damage spread, non-restrictive class limits and all-talk
The exact servers I avoid like the plague.
Enjoy your fastspawn hlstatsx orange_x
Such as?
If by socializing you mean yelling at eachother then yeah I suppose.
yeah mega 1337 skillz man
Such as all CP maps, all the PL maps, plus hydro, plus a couple others
Er, no one yells at each other. You've never even been in there how would you even know that?
Yeah man, forgive a competetive player trying to enjoy something a little serious. :)
I'll be on a server that likes to get stuck on Steel if you need me.
I hate how people think serious means elitist CSS players.
[editline]02:23AM[/editline]
It means killing for once goddamn.
Competitive players who are so skilled because they can break the game and then act like it's serious business.
Is that meant to be like a question or something
No I'm a competetive player because I play competetively
And I run a server that emulates a semi-competetive environment
:)
Heres a tip: Take off alltalk and fastspawn its shit
Goddamn man just take out a gun and shoot people while Trying to Capture things without Alltalk or sped up Spawnspeed; it's called Vanilla.
Oh and no reserved slots if you have any really tends to piss some people off
My server doesn't have sped up spawn times, that's vanilla. Balance. :)
Alltalk is voted off occasionally, whenever people feel like it.
And nah I don't have reserved slots.
That's my point.
Then why take killing people so seriously?
No bullshit, just good ol' TF2.
One of my fav TF2 servers is a custom map with crits on, RTV, can vote gravity on and off, vote melee on and off and insta-respawn.
One of my fav TF2 servers is a custom map with crits on, RTV, can vote gravity on and off, vote melee on and off and insta-respawn.
you're everything that's wrong with this game
Do you mean that your server is vanilla or that sped up spawn times is on vanilla?
What?
No, vanilla (default) spawn times are vanilla. Once you change that, it's not vanilla.
My server has standard (default, vanilla) spawn times.
And playing competitively: removing part of the game.
Well playing on shitty custom orange map with hlxstats, gravity and stupid plugins on too.
I don't think playing competitively is removing part of the game, it's just another way to play it, some people enjoy it better this way, and that's their choice. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a competitive player, but I enjoy playing normal pubs, and by normal I mean normal: 24-32 slots, official map rotation, even some good custom maps, crits on, etc.
Honestly seems a bit half and half to me. You say you've got this serious server, no damage spread, no crits, but then you have alltalk on. Alltalk is usually for a NON-serious server, and accompanies HLSS Usage, yada yada. If you look at TeamNull or HyperGN (Which you may be familiar with being an Australian), then you note they have alltalk accompanied with billions of addons.
But then again, if you're going serious, expect pretty much noone on mostly. TF2 has its competitive side, but its not huge.
Yeah I know Alltalk isn't serious-business, but it kept being voted on and eventually becamse standard on my server. Mostly because a lot of people who know each other play, and we do talk with each other a lot. It just makes sense for us. Never hear any complaints but most people who join add to the conversations so it's not a bad thing.

Turn off everything that is not vanilla, attract professionals. i have LOTS good people on my friend list who complain that they never find a perfect vanilla servers.
Turning off crits is a very bad decision, by doing this you turn off half of the gameplay mechanics.

There's your problem.
Trase, most comp players would prefer no crits. You say to leave it vanilla to attract pros, but to leave crits on - You can't have both.
And no, that isn't a problem at all.
Put in description, "4chan partyvan"
Will attract alot of micspamming, but hey, it works.
Haha, I'm sure that'll get the numbers but... I think I prefer quality over quantity.
crits and damage spread are a perfectly good game mechanic and only retards would want to remove them
op please kill yourself
oh gawd no damage spread. you can quit being soldier and demoman already
i would never play on a server like that
