How does your attitude during a game of TF2 affect the gameplay?
I recently watched a rather unfortunate occurrence on a server that suggests some serious animosity between new and old players of the game, and thought it could make interesting discussion. Just a random server with a friend of mine, who is new to TF2 and thereby hasn't learned all the tactics and such yet. I would expect some friendliness and understanding towards new players, especially on a public server, but that wasn't the case here. Instead, He got yelled at for being bad at the game and one person even tried to voteban him. However, he was doing nothing wrong - not trolling, trash-talking, complaining, or mic-spamming. It was only when I stepped in and told the 'public vets' to quit being such arses that he was able to enjoy the game without being constantly insulted. (I remember such insulting behavior when I was 'new', too) Is this the attitude this community has towards new players? I surely hope not.
So what kind of attitude do you take to servers? Do you play to win? Have fun? Both? What's your impression of the overall attitude of the community?
Screaming at Hippies makes me happier than one man can be.
In many cases, I join to have fun and end up playing to win.
On pub servers anyway.
I can get excessively frustrated in game with cheap deaths or bad decisions, usually affects how I play the game too (i.e. Pyro becomes more m1, Soldier becomes more rocket spam). I hate rage heavies though.
Overall, the community is nice I think, it's just that it's easier to meet dickheads because of how much more vocal they are. That being said, I've been called many bad things for using stock weapons. Apparently score and teamwork is meaningless to people who idolise hats.
I don't understand why people are saying TF2 players are asses
I'm quite new at this game (48 hours), and i've never experienced anyone being an asshole to me
I don't take this game or myself too seriously. However, yesterday there was a heavy who kept on drilling a hole through the middle of a breakfloor map after countless times of me telling him to stop and explaining why it's not helping, he kept on doing and I was a bit mean.
I'll teach new players how to airblast and stuff though.
I've met some really nice people, and some really big pricks.
It's a very varied community, i'd say. It has both ends of spectrum.
I have an alt on which I installed non-premium TF2, with a really f2p-ish name. I love playing on Valve servers with it and pretending to be new to the game and asking which weapon does what. It's always amusing to watch hatted people dissing me despite the fact that I'm topping the scoreboard and dominating their ass. :v:

I like this idea. I think I'll be trying this out.
After the introduction of Free to Play of course there are many disgruntled TF2 veterans, mad their game now has a constant influx of new players. So it makes sense that someone may hit a tipping point with the new players, and in turn, take it out on your friend. I personally have never seen such hostility, but I cannot speak from a new player's point of view, as I've been playing since the beta.
Always trying to start one-classed rushes.
New players on my team irritate me sometimes, and if there's an easy way to help them than I'll make a suggestion (like moving the sentry from our home point to at least 2nd [preferably mid] when we're already trying to attack the 4th). Honestly if it looks like they're at least putting effort and trying, then I don't mind how well they play. Unless we have a shit ton of spies and snipers and are losing, then I start making suggestions for what classes we really need.
There are some pub servers that have a lot of long-time regulars but they're not always active (like the Lost Continents SA servers).
I play to get kills on my strange weapons.
So what kind of attitude do you take to servers? Do you play to win? Have fun? Both?
Both, I find winning to be fun and having fun to be winning.
I really like playing against players that put forth effort and work as a team, so I have no remorse about trying to win games as fast as possible because I believe that teams learn a lot from defeat and learn to improve, whether it be team composition of classes, being more aggressive, maintaining a proper defense, etc., so by beating enemies you help them in the long run (unless they ragequit).
I play to have fun but not in a "friendly hoovy don't shoot spycrab pls XD" way, but I have fun when two teams are more or less evenly matched and things go a bit back and forth.
And when it comes to other players, as long as they are actually playing and not standing in spawn trying to trade, or grief or something... as long as they actually play, I couldn't care less if they are new or old, good or bad, what shows they watch or what fandoms they are a part of.
Depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll play to win, sometimes I'll do stupid stuff like run around as heavy with the sandvich out and throw it to the opposition when my teammates hurt them.
Listening to music seems to help me play better for some reason, makes me calmer too.
When I'm not playing with friends on public servers I get rather serious and normally end up carrying the team. When I am playing with friends, it just turns into a screw around fest of Medic pairs and messing with the other team. :v:
Either way I don't change much. Still a happy camper!
I mostly fool around, usually applying some gimmick loadout or handicap unless I feel like playing a particular class.
I usually remain relativly nonchalant and calm, unless there's an issue with stacked teams, pub stomping, or somebody going on about how incredible they are at video games.
I never really react to it though, past mild annoyance.
Sometimes when I get bored, I change my alts name to random things and just piss about, usually on 2fort or Doomsday servers.
Notable Examples:
Naming myself "Tom Cruise's Only Character" playing spy and micspamming the Mission Impossible theme whenever I get a kill.
Naming myself "Yakkity Sax" playing Scout and running around with the intel aimlessly micspamming the Benny Hill theme.
All in all, people usually find it funny, some hostility is bound to appear, but I think players enjoy a bit of pointless entertainment.
I like to be nice. I'll use the "Thanks!" command if someone saves my ass, whether through killing my would-be murderer, assisting me, making a push, Hi-Fivin, and especially Medics <3
Also "Nice Shot" and "Good Job". Sometimes I'll just sit by friendly snipers and say "Nice Shot" whenever they get a kill, and I'll also use those commands when a dude I'm pocketing/ubering is doing a good job.
Also being a friendly heavy when servers get empty-ish, or when people aren't serious. Something is just funny about seeing a big bear of a man crawling around, screaming "HELP" and grasping a sandwich.
And sometimes I try out a weird loadout/handicap and go with it. I was doing pretty good as a scout only using the Sandman, and using the Mittens/Shotgun combo while ignoring your minigun is fun too.
I have a habit of saying thanks after every kill, regardless if anyone else helped me.
I play to have fun, be that derping about or actually fighting. Plus, I tend to spam "Go, go, go!", "Help!", and "Thanks!" much more than I really should.
I've only gotten yelled at for using the Quick Fix before it was fixed, but that happened to anyone who fielded it.
Most pubs are pretty neutral, with only a few dickheads every once in a while. One that sticks out is a certain pro player who dropped into my usual Foundry server with a nonstop stream of insults towards both teams' players, despite being told to go lobby if he hated noobs. It was frustrating that he is also the most amazing Ambassador crackshot.
I'm good-natured; I too spam voice commands endlessly.
Unless I'm not in the mood for something, I'll usually go with the flow of the server I'm on: either serious or shenanigans.
As for newbies, I try to help them, but if they aren't learning after I've answered a question one might have whom then proceeds to ask it over and over again, then I get ragey.
If it's a low skill player that is on my team: let him be.
On the other team: target practice!
The community is awful and almost every server sees a pubby commander yelling at teammates. A few i ran into today actually came from facepunch too. If you play on valve servers for fun, never not keep text chat off. Not saying i'm bad at the game but its always dishearting to see new players get torn into just because they wanted to try out a new game.
Or just play on non-valve servers.

Welcome to bits of competitive in pubs
Communication IS vital you know.

It's not vital to enjoy a game. Obviously you don't play valve servers because theres little to no communication aside from screeching at new players and again thats something that bothers me more than it should.
As I said, text chat stays on in Non-Valve servers. Valve servers are where I go to just shoot mans and not really care about the objective. I'll occasionally tutor a new player, but some shitheel on my team will tell him to go back to Halo over and over so theres no point to doing that.

Oh the irony. I actually do play on Valve servers sometimes just to troll the newbies (as in gameplay-wise, like using the Saharan Spy set with the DR). When a newbie asks a legitimate question, I help them or point them to the wiki.
I usually play best when I'm fucking around and having fun.

That's because we're the friendliest of the friendliest.
