I've been away from TF2 for about 2 1/2 weeks and felt like playing it earlier today. Nothing happens after Preparing to Launch...
First, I verified the game cache, tried to launch again and nothing happened.
Second, I deleted local game content, redownloaded, tried to launch again and still nothing happened.
Third, I deleted local game content and my entire TF2 folder from SteamApps and redownloaded, STILL it won't launch.
I deleted ClientRegistry.blob and removed my launch options -sw and -noborder and now it gets to the Valve intro, and right after "Powered by Steam" it closes, no error or anything.
I'm close to just reinstalling Steam as a whole, but I don't want to go through that hassle if it could be something else. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this running again? I've had it since launch and never had this problem. I'm running on Windows XP on hardware bought at the back-half of 2008, if that helps at all. I'm desperate. :frown:
I also want to note, it's only TF2 doing this. All my other games work, which is every other Valve game ever released.
Okay, give me all the boxes in the world for this suggestion, but;
Have you tried restarting your computer?
Look at your task manager; does hl2.exe comes up and goes away immediately?
Maybe your security software is blocking it?
I had this exact problem.
Update your drivers.
It works.

Yea, I did after each step I listed in the OP.

Nope, hl2.exe is not running, it was one of the first things I checked. I also disabled any virus software, I'm running AVG and have been for about 2 years now.
I think I had a problem similar to this a few weeks ago.
Adding -dxlevel 90 (at least I think that's the command) to the launch options did the trick. Granted, the game looked like ass, but at least I was able to play.
The problem magically fixed itself after a while and I can play normally now. :downs:

Don't disagree with this man. :v:
This actually worked, thanks a lot!

Scratch that, it'll boot and everything but if I remove that launch option it stops working. And when I join a game there are no visuals, at all. I can hit escape and get to the menu, and I can still hear the sounds, but I can't actually do or see anything.
Is it only with tf2 or all games ran through steam? When I had this problem I couldn't run tf2/gmod/l4d or any game that I launched from steam.
If you had a problem like me I used this to fix it.

It appears to only be the three newer games in the Orange Box (those being, Ep2, Portal, and TF2).
use the -fullscreen in startup for tf2.

That worked! Now I can set it back to windowed and all that and it still works fine. Thank you so much.
