I'm really not a fan of crates, I've had a large number of them that I never plan to buy keys for, and the odds are highly skewed against you getting something worthwhile, which is why I feel perhaps we should get a large number of crates and basically delete them as a way of protesting to valve, that myself, and a lot of other people dislike the large numbre of crates you get spammed and have no intention of ever opening.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not pissed that the crates exist, I'm quite happy to have a few crates drop now and then, and those who wish to purchase keys should certainly be able to, I'm just tired of my backpack having a constant 5 or more crates that I can't unload because the damn things are in such high supply they're nearly worthless, and you can't usually mass offload them for anything decent, I've actually had trouble ditching crates on a 1 crate for 1 of any weapon basis, and I feel it's really annoying that my weekly drop cap is getting chewed up by useless crates I can't use nor trade.
TL;DR, delete a fuckton of crates, keep some kind of tally going and demand valve bring in some kind of alternate use for crates, which doesn't require 2.50 per crate.
Sidenotes: I'm not asking people to donate crates to me for me to delete because that's retarded, nor demanding anyone start deleting crates. I'm just throwing the idea out there, perhaps we can give valve the message that not everyone approves of the crates.
There is no more demand for crates anymore.
So I have 16 crates lying in my backpack.
I'd wait for Valve to stimulate the mannconomy.
2 crates = scrap metal
They should just lower crate drop rate or allow crafting crates to metal
Valve should make it so you can craft two or three crates into a scrap metal.

This. THIS.
2 crates = refined metal
Valve should make it so you can craft two or three crates into a scrap metal.
Not gonna happen. It would hurt key sales.
I just traded 8 crates for 2 scrap metal, I was surprised I got SOMETHING for it.
The value of crates will probably only get worse.
Valve should definitely work out some alternative way to get rid of crates other than trading them away, because barely anyone wants crates anymore.
how bout
10 crates = reclaimed
[editline]22nd November 2010[/editline]
wait no, thats stupid.
is it stupid? :ohdear:
I got hatless Sniper for 8 crates. Not sure how much people want them now. But with the series 5 crates I'm considering buying 1-2 keys.
I remember when crates were new, my friend got two decent hats for one crate
2 crates = scrap metal
And make it so that if you crafted a crate containing an unusual hat the game plays a specific sound or something :q:
2 crates = scrap metal
This god please
And make it so that if you crafted a crate containing an unusual hat the game plays a specific sound or something :q:
It's a clip of Robin Walker laughing uncontrollably for fifteen seconds and a little pop-up recommending you the Mann Co. Supply Crate Key from the store with the text "Better luck next time!"
I remember when crates were new, my friend got two decent hats for one crate
I lost a reclaimed metal and £2.50 to a crate.
Got some white paint and thought it was a good day :v:
And make it so that if you crafted a crate containing an unusual hat the game plays a specific sound or something :q:
but what it contains isn't determined on it's drop
what it contains is determined when it's opened
but what it contains isn't determined on it's drop

then they could just change it to be on drop instead.
That would require much more data to be stored, and would be a waste of resources. It's much easier to have it use a RNG to determine when you open.
If the item contained in a crate was determined on drop, then someone would make some kind of program to find it out, if such program could be done.

I wouldn't be so much worried about that, but seeing a bunch of trade offers out there like this:
SERIES 5 CRATE FOR SALE! CONTAINS UNUSUAL GLENGARRY BONNET!! I WANT 4 EARBUDS+82 BILL'S HATS+AN UNUSUAL GLENGARRY BONNET FOR IT!!!
Eight Crates = Scrap
One crate is one refined. :downs:
I don't understand at all why they can't make the keys droppable?
Or atleast lower the price to something reasonable, maybe 0.49€, after all, crates drop all the time and the only existing way is to pay for that overpriced 2.49€ key and probably waste your money just to get a duplicate item.
Or they could make keys have more uses, such as 5 uses per key.
Or just make crates craftable to scrap metal.
Just imagine it, right now Valve makes 249€ for just 100 crates being opened, simply because keys can't be found and can only be bought.
To be exact, about everything in the Mann Co. store is horribly priced. You can buy a Natascha for 1.99€ but a Familiar Fez costs a ridiculous 17.49€.
Overall, Valve has no proper reason to not make keys drop and forcing you to pay 2.49€ just to open a single crate.
The best offer I got was 2 crates for 2 reclaimed. I wish they still were that valuable.
Valve's only way of justifying not dropping keys is GREED
keys should be droppable and as rare as nametags
Are you serious? Deleting the crates would make people with unusuals even more rich and greedy. Hell naw
I think they should just make keys droppable and crates craftable together. Even 3 crates = scrap would be okay. It's really crazy how Valve profits on people this way. Sure, they don't force you to buy the stuff, but they don't feel the need to lower or correct(euro=dollar?) the prices because they know people are that desperate to get hats.
